Online Violence Against Women
Dear All- Facebook is hosting a roundtable to discuss the issue of online violence against women and our platforms, in Nairobi, likely in February. This is mostly about learning from key women’s rights orgs and others with a clear view on the scope of the issue and with ideas for how to address it. We’ll also talk about some of the things we are doing already, with the view to learning how to do better. It will be hosted in Nairobi, but it’s meant to be a regional conversation, so we plan to fly in important voices from across sub-Saharan Africa. We’d be grateful for recommendations on excellent people to include. We want to keep it small enough to have a meaningful conversation, so we are thinking about 30 people total. Recommendations? You can reply on this list, or directly to Akua, who is cc’ed. Hello Ebele, Greetings and thanks for sharing, just a quick question, can we have a chance in setting up a remote Hub, to participate? so women in the Gambia can come to our Jokkolab facility at our centre to join in remotely in the discussion and share their thoughts and as questions too. We plan if its possible to get 30 women of various sectors government in Technology, , Academic, Civil Society, Young female advocates, business women etc in the Gambia to attend and be able to part take remotely since you said its a regional event. Please let me know your thoughts on this. Kind Regards and Happy holidays to all. Peace Poncelet On 17 December 2015 at 18:17, Ebele Okobi via kictanet < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:

Dear Ebele, There could not be better timing for your proposed activities. The International Association of Women in Radio and Television have been involved in two studies that might be of interest to you. The link to the latest research is here; http://webfoundation.org/about/research/womens-rights-online-2015/ I have also attached a report from an earlier study carried out by IAWRT and APC for you perusal. Dear Ebele Okobi, I would love to attend. I am a writer, blogger, filmmaker and founder of ROFFEKE (Rock 'n' Roll Film Festival, Kenya). Also, I am an alumnus of the AWEPON Internship programme. AWEPON stands for African Women's Economic Policy Network. The online world, just like the offline world, is still largely male dominated. I hope the issue of online violence against women in terms of online discrimination (the gender digital divide) will be explored. This is important because the 21st century economy is largely an online economy so those who are discriminated online will and do suffer economic consequences. Regards, Mildred Achoch. Thnx Barrack for your quick response. Lets hear from the rest. We have about 800 Listers on KICTAnet...most being lurkers ofcourse. But this is your chance to make your maiden speech/wishlist :-) You can speak as individual or group, but eventually GG says we will compile the response along the media, academia, developer, regulator, operator, policy related issue and submit to the new team at some cocktail event to be orgarnised sometime early next year. Toa maoni. These guys cant hack it without your input. walu. Walu, For me its painful to see the differences in access to data between Nrb and the counties. The posta internet cyber cafes were the best thing in the late 90's. Then I thought...maybe we should add on his inbox a few of our own ideas/ICT wishlist. Something for them (Victor+Itemere) to do in the first 100days. After that it is often impossible to make an impact.
Here's my wishlist
1. Use technology to get rid of the legendary Nairobi Jam 2. Get ICTs to Counties i.e. Kenya is NOT Nairobi and Nairobi is NOT Kenya :-) 3. Return the Subsidized Laptop program for University Students (Wezesha program) 4. Resolve the contentious Safaricom 'Dominance' Question. 5. ? 6. ?
Plse add your ideas before logging off for Xmas this thrsday.
regards.
walu.

Hi Walu, Add this to the list: The issue of laptops for school children should be shelved. Instead, the line ministry should adopt a computer lab type of implementation (N-Computing comes to mind) where computer labs are set, probably on properly designed 40-feet containers equipped with solar+electricity power. This makes more economic sense than havingeach child with a laptop which will only create headache on maintenance, thefts, etc. On 23 December 2015 at 09:09, Walubengo J via kictanet < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:

We are getting really good participation from the community. I've noticed some points have been reiterated, which shows community commitment and passion. We should have a way to make them float at the top. Like cyber Security, data ducts, ERM, data protection, internet cost and access, and job opportunities for the youth. Add this: xx. WTO MC10. We had some great announcements on taxes for ICT equipments. Please elaborate what will be implemented, and when it will be implemented. Listers, Walu, thanks for bringing this up and CS for welcoming it. My Wish list request: Use and leverage technology to address Kenya's ticking time bomb of youth unemployment. I know we are all excited to see CS Mucheru and his team steering our country's economic growth and transformation using ICT. We can ask and also offer support to the CS. My company OPENWORLD LTD is willing to invest KES 120 Million into this project. NB: Roughly 70 percent of the Kenyan working age youth - almost 10 million people - are unemployed, although a surprising number are very well educated and possess the kinds of skills a healthy economy. Indeed, the key self taught skill for these working age youth are ICT via mobile. Joblessness among all people of working age is a serious problem in Kenya, but among young people, it is a catastrophe. Dear listers, I am getting into this discussion pretty late but am sure I can still add my 2cents. The issue of the nascent BPO sector and Konza TechnoCity are intertwined but I think we have been missing the point by a mile. I have said on this platform in the past that what is needed here mostly is the development of advanced skills in IT. This is what is going to make a difference as far as BPO is concerned. We can have greater success this way than we can have with the best marketing effort or with the brightest techno city. What will bring work to Kenya is skills, not marketing campaigns. We need to leverage on our millions of youth and give them very highly advanced technical skills, on a large scale, then the work will come automatically. This is what experience has taught me. For instance, the Presidential Digital Talent program by ICTA is a good start. But we need this to be scaled 1000 times to make real impact. Then we need to stop Universities from offering word processing training to their students. How do we expect to compete globally if we are still training IT undergraduates on how to use a word processor? We need to teach them to think, not to be mere users of tools. We need to be makers of tools, then sell the same to the rest of the world. We need to learn to produce, not just consume. This is the challenge that we will face for a long time, and the government will continue missing the point by trying to tax people more to create development. Development should be a result of more production, not consumption. Just my thoughts.. Ikua On Thu, Dec 24, 2015 at 9:14 AM, Walubengo J via kictanet < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:

So drop your ideas. My last one is:
* Whatever happened to the BPO dream? Since the foreign companies were not flocking in en mass as planned, I thought Government was to 'outsource' part of its services as a way of maturing/jumpstarting the local BPO market. Could this be the time to do this?

I'm the old skul type. I'm giving whoever is updating that etherpad a hard time. I don't expect the the CS and PS(s) to have the magic bullet. But let me add some staw on their backs. 13. Universal Service Fund. Is it a teddy bear for us to stare at and admire? 14. Why do my Internet bundles bought by my hard earned money expire? Is it even legal? 15. Wayleaves and trenches. Who else is farming and muddying our streets and pavements come January? Can we just do one humongous duct and forget all the mediocrity? I've noticed we are keen to build proper sewers and giant rainwater trenches, which is a good thing, but we are not keen to invest on what will drive this economy. The Internet. 16. Huduma centers is a great initiative. Polish the rough edges, and automate entire processes. This is one of the greatest achievements of the digital government. 17. I get my treatment (hypothetically) at King George VI hospital built in 1901, the centenary old hospital in Upper hill. Over the holiday, I am in Nakuru and I'm getting treatment at Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital. The nurse here does not have my file. She says it's at King George VI hospital in Nairobi. I'm seated at the casualty waiting patiently for them to send the file via Posta so that I can get treatment. We are in year 2015. I'm still waiting at casualty.... Regards
Mwendwa. Well put across points. I'd like to add some meat on the health care information issue. In 1996 the US passed the Health Insurance Portability and Protection Act (HIPPA). One of the cornerstones of this act was the one on Electronic Records. An electronic health record (EHR), or electronic medical record (EMR), refers to the systematized collection of patient and population electronically-stored health information in a digital format. These records can be shared across different health care settings. Records are shared through network-connected, enterprise-wide information systems or other information networks and exchanges. EHRs may include a range of data, including demographics, medical history, medication and allergies, immunization status, laboratory test results, radiology images, vital signs, personal statistics like age and weight, and billing information. EHS systems are designed to store data accurately and to capture the state of a patient across time. It eliminates the need to track down a patient's previous paper medical records and assists in ensuring data is accurate and legible. It can reduce risk of data replication as there is only one modifiable file, which means the file is more likely up to date, and decreases risk of lost paperwork. Due to the digital information being searchable and in a single file, EMR's are more effective when extracting medical data for the examination of possible trends and long term changes in a patient. Population-based studies of medical records may also be facilitated by the widespread adoption of EHR's and EMR's. This is not rocket science anymore. My Wish list 2016: over the years accessibility to information has always featured in our constitution ,disability law etc..unfortunately this has not been actualized for persons with disabilities/challenges. if you are putting your content out there for public consumption ,can it be for the public across the board (with or without disabilities/challenges). If this can be done starting with the government websites, contents/information, mandatory for all the TV stations to have translators more especially for News Pro grammes etc. Kind Regards, *'Chance Favors the prepared mind'* - Louis Pasteur On Wed, Dec 23, 2015 at 11:53 AM, Mildred Achoch via kictanet < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:
My wish: During the next general elections, an option of voting via mobile phones or online. I know this option will come with a lot of challenges but it would be so helpful!

Hi Walu, et al, 7) Develop a framework where govt builds ducts country wide (not fiber) and develops a business model where private sector leases the ducts to blow their own fiber. I believe this will lower the cost of fiber infrastructure/access. It is self sustainable (maintenance and additional ducts can be built using revenue generated from leasing model) My 2 cents. Hi Ebele, Please consider the Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) and the Coalition on Violence Against Women (COVAW). Kenya Human Rights Commission has also done work on rights violations online although it was not focused on women's rights.
Best, Ebele
