The cable cuts and the Denial of Service attack on some servers are unrelated. The problem in East Africa is due to cable cuts in Egypt. A Denial of service attack is the equivalent of a stampede, where too many people (internet requests) are trying to squeeze in through a small opening - the point here being the many requests are malicious and designed to make the opening inaccessible to legitimate users. And just to make it clear, the magnification of the DDoS problem is uncalled for. I am still wondering why someone decided to call it the "biggest cyber attack in history". Realtime Black Lists (RBLs) are special-purpose DNS servers only contacted by SMTP engines (for those who have configured their SMTP engines to do so) and it's not a default setting in many SMTP servers, IIRC. The so called cyber attack would only slow down e-mail processing for those servers using the spamhaus RBLs. There is no way this is supposed to translate into slow speeds for DNS queries which are not directed towards RBLs. And how some guys managed to glue that to the Fiber cuts remains a mystery. Maybe rumor-mongers who like adding salt to make their rumor look real. On 28 March 2013 12:11, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

Edith You removed this post directly from my fingers (if I may be allowed to paraphrase). There has been general slow service across most service providers. From Zuku and Access Kenya who are my service providers the standard response when you inquire is that there is a service interruption. This interruption of service in the Internet Service Provision sector has now become a major issue that needs to be addressed urgently. The unconfirmed reports are that Seacom and Teams are both 'down' (Pun intended). As far as I know and I stand corrected is that no one has issued a concise statement to the public to explain this issue. This makes a non-sense of our road to Silicon Savannah. Dear all, Another element that might be contributing to the perceived slow internet speeds are the frequent outages at KIXP due to power problems. Apparently the exchange point has been having serious power related problems that have resulted in extended downtimes. This was brought to my attention by one of Kenya's largest carriers - apparently they were asking me if there was any way I could help out of frustration that nothing was being done about the problem. At this point I will shamelessly plug this blog piece about KIXP independence from TESPOK http://mashilingi.blogspot.com/2012/04/which-way-for-kenya-internet-exchange... It seems that the current structure is actually acting as a barrier which is preventing the IXP from being relocated to better infrastructure in one of the many data centers we have around the city (as was suggested by the member who raised the issue to me). It seems that the current structure is actually acting as a barrier which is preventing the IXP from being relocated to better infrastructure in one of the many data centers we have around the city (as was suggested by the member who raised the issue to me).
I had thought that KIXP had a backup location in a data center in NBO as well as the Mombasa IX, which is a separate peering mesh. Is that not so? -- Cheers, McTim "A name indicates what we seek. An address indicates where it is. A route indicates how we get there." Jon Postel
Hi McTim, I don't know as I haven't been directly involved with KIXP for a number of years now. But for such a major carrier to come crying to me there must be some issues :) Best regards, Brian On Tue, Apr 2, 2013 at 8:29 PM, McTim <dogwallah@gmail.com> wrote:

It seems that the current structure is actually acting as a barrier which is preventing the IXP from being relocated to better infrastructure in one of the many data centers we have around the city (as was suggested by the member who raised the issue to me).
I had thought that KIXP had a backup location in a data center in NBO as well as the Mombasa IX, which is a separate peering mesh. Is that not so?

They do have backup PoPs but there has been reluctance by some carriers to connect to them. Perhaps they haven't seen the need... until now... On Apr 2, 2013 8:51 PM, "Brian Munyao Longwe" <blongwe@gmail.com> wrote:
Hi McTim,
I don't know as I haven't been directly involved with KIXP for a number of years now. But for such a major carrier to come crying to me there must be some issues :)

Robert, When I set up KIXP the only means of ISPs connecting was via Telkom copper. Then KDN brought in fiber which made a huge difference. There were no data centers to speak of at the time. And when 2 or 3 companies later introduced them it was too competitive. Needless to say - organizational structure is a very important element in the decisions that govern such installations. as things stand right now KIXP's decisions are made by the TESPOK board so KIXP members are subject to that structure - what I dont understand is why a major carrier feels they are not being heard? Brian Seems like we are not learning the lessons of Governance (or lack thereof) in Organizations. The issue of KIXP isn't of performance related to Technology but of governance and ownership. Brian thanks for bringing this issue up and going ahead to give us the genesis of the problem. And I agree with you entirely that an independent structure is probably what is needed. Do the 'owners' (forgive my Spanish) have the cajunas to do the right thing? George Asante sana Ndugu for sharing. This is a well written research/report on the media landscape in general in Kenya. Well done. May I make few suggestions? 1. Would be nice to map out local social media influencers in the different social sites. 2. What is the value of local online advertising? Unfortunately this is something that no research company has done very well. This would be helpful to encourage the development of local content. Experience has shown that there is a huge appetite for local content ('Papa Shirandula', 'Mother in Law' anyone?) 3. Besides Alexa, which in my humble opinion is a bit subjective (since you needed to have installed the Alexa tool bar) Is there a other ranking tool? the research and media monitoring companies Ipsos, Nielsen etc need to look into this. Not sure also whether Alexa picks mobile Internet usage. 4. Breakdown of online media against radio, TV etc. My thoughts.
Best regards,
Brian

Asante sana Ndugu for sharing.

Dear all,
Another element that might be contributing to the perceived slow internet speeds are the frequent outages at KIXP due to power problems.
Best regards,

Hi,
Quick fix, move the equipment to a reliable data center such as Frontier Opticals Networks (FON), Safaricom or Internet Solutions especially since Bruce Houses does not have a generator.
Brian, having been on the team that initially setup KIXP why didn't you implement a continuity plan?

Dear all,
Another element that might be contributing to the perceived slow internet speeds are the frequent outages at KIXP due to power problems.
Best regards,
Brian

Hi,
It has been slow since I cannot remember. I am using Orange personally and it has very bad fluctuations. One minute google opens, one minute your staring waiting until it time outs. When are they likely to make things better?
