Unsolicited political messages
Good morning Listers, Have any of you received this (attached) unsolicited political text(s)? Where are these politicians getting people's phone numbers? And are they not aware that we now have a Data Protection Act? KICTANet did a brief on Personal Data and Elections 2022 <https://www.kictanet.or.ke/?mdocs-file=44723> that assesses, the effect of the Data Protection Act 2019 implementation on the impending Kenyan elections in 2022 The significance of the Act lies in the fact that, in contrast to past elections, the 2022 election is the first to be held under a data protection statute. I also wonder where they get people's numbers. I am reminded of the way political parties registered people who are not their members, perhaps using our IDs and phone numbers. This is the reason I am against security guards at different premises collecting these details. On Wed, 20 Jul 2022 at 09:54, Grace Githaiga via KICTANet < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:

I agree, I recently checked the Registrar of Political Parties portal on ecitizen and apparently I am a member of the Maendeleo Democratic Party, I don't know when or how I registered but they indicate the membership number as well. They have all the details, full names, constituency, ID, county and ward. How does this happen? On the security collection of names, ID and email at times. Many do that for security purposes just incase. However, with the Data Protection Act and regulations in place the company in charge is to register with the ODPC. On Wed, 20 Jul 2022, 10:37 Liz via KICTANet, <kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:

Grace, You are not alone. I have also been a victim of these messages. The funny thing is, while I live in area one, I am not a voter in that area but the local MCA aspirant is one sending me these messages. I keep wondering where on earth they picked that I am a resident of that area and send me such messages. On what Liz brought out on the use of personal identification document at buildings, what is the implication of that in view of the data protection act? Those handlers seem not to care as we still see them with old filled books some with data collected over the years. TBH I never leave accurate details with security officers. I also try to use Safaricom shops for MPESA transactions, but I have also noticed some no longer insist that I leave them with my personal details in a book like they used to before. Hi. I think candidates are somehow buying or getting this data from somewhere. I was sent a message by Alai and a relative in the same house was also sent the same message at the same time. We vote in the same polling station which means the candidate has the information of people voting in Kileleshwa. It is a serious data breach. On what Liz brought out on the use of personal identification document at buildings, what is the implication of that in view of the data protection act? Those handlers seem not to care as we still see them with old filled books some with data collected over the years.

From the look of it, the details that these guys have is ONLY available from IEBC; So the million dollar question is... Is IEBC sharing voters'
Listers, The issue seems like a pandemic right now. Receiving VOTE FOR.... at times past midnight, and what is worrying is they have all your details, from county through to ward and the polling centre. details with aspirants? Throwing a BIG SPANNER into the gearbox... Dead people appear to have *RESURRECTED! *I checked details of a relative who has been dead for almost 10years but they appear to be voters! Possibly Kictanet could help with this in future. A guidebook such as: https://www.kictanet.or.ke/?mdocs-file=43772 would be useful for political aspirants to effectively use the internet, and for voters to get useful information in a cost efective manner. Effective use of the internet to convey information such as manifestos would greatly improve campaign quality. An SMS can typically only provide a small amount of information.
Some innovative use of Apps:

Hi.
I think candidates are somehow buying or getting this data from somewhere. I was sent a message by Alai and a relative in the same house was also sent the same message at the same time. We vote in the same polling station which means the candidate has the information of people voting in Kileleshwa. It is a serious data breach.

TBH I never leave accurate details with security officers. I also try to use Safaricom shops for MPESA transactions, but I have also noticed some no longer insist that I leave them with my personal details in a book like they used to before.

Good morning Listers,
Have any of you received this (attached) unsolicited political text(s)? Where are these politicians getting people's phone numbers? And are they not aware that we now have a Data Protection Act?
KICTANet did a brief on Personal Data and Elections 2022 <https://www.kictanet.or.ke/?mdocs-file=44723> that assesses, the effect of the Data Protection Act 2019 implementation on the impending Kenyan elections in 2022 The significance of the Act lies in the fact that, in contrast to past elections, the 2022 election is the first to be held under a data protection statute.
