Hi Edith, It is interesting that you bring this up as it goes back to the key issue here that we in ICT have absolutely no understanding or appreciation of how relevant PSK is to delivering e-commerce and until that happens the organisation will continue on a down hill spiral finally embedding itself in the ground. What is even worse is that Dr. Ndemo is even more clueless than the current PMG about the relevance if PSK in delivering e-commerce solutions which is clear from their statements about how email is replacing the services offered by the postal service which cannot be any further from the truth. I always ask, once I have ordered a pair of shoes online and made the payment electronically exactly how does the shoe get to me? Until 3D printers becoming cheaper than a DVD player there is only one answer to the question especially if your target market is Kenya (note: Nairobi is not Kenya). The new PMG believes that the future of PSK is in payment systems a field that even the banks have realised "iko na wenyewe", which is why they have dumped all initiatives to jump in bed with the owners of money transfer and payment a.k.a. Safaricom. I have been watching DHL closely as they introduce an agency module for there services, as PSK reduces locations DHL increases theirs which begs the question who is the fool here?. A company called Aramex has recently received a huge capital injection by a Dubai based investor to develop their delivery network in Kenya all this while PSK management, including the board of which Dr. Ndemo is a member, run around trying to go into a field that they have neither the skill nor experience. It is my sincere hope that the rumour about UhuRuto wanting the Cabinet Secretaries and Principle Secretaries should be under 50 comes to pass then maybe we can have a team that is open to new ideas and does more than regurgitate statements. I reiterate again, PSK is a sleeping giant who is being kept sedated by small minded players in the courier industry. Regards PS. Posta is to the courier Industry what Orange Kenya is to the telecoms. Stuck with a pre 2000 public service attitude and lots of legacy infrastructure that is a actually a goldmine but is viewed as dead weight. As far as i can remember Posta has always had prime locations allover the country and the ubiquity is only being rivaled by Safaricom and Mpesa nowadays. As Yawe says, before we can download a gadget from ebay to your living room, the need for a national, reliable and ubiquitous carrier remains. I remember some months back the cck flexing muscle by forcing other carriers to raise their rates. Why is the postmaster general not accountable to the monumental failure of his organisation? @Brian, I was looking at track record alone. Although that is not a very good basis to trace talent since we should allow new potential to be discovered. I would be very reluctant to have a trainee captain take over a sinking ship. Remember, Cream always rise to the top. Probably we should name those local managerial leaders who have floated to the the top. And we should embrace MJ as our own the way Americans snap at our talent like hungry crocodiles. @Yahwe, I would not be steadfast to discount MJ's achievements, since we cannot really know how Safaricom would have performed if managed by a different team. Factors that affect achievement take many prongs, among them board members, government interest, quality of employees, product line, innovation, e.t.c. Robert, I am not clueless as you may think. We have done restructuring proposals to Cabinet before but one needs approval to proceed. You recall the problem we went through Telkom. We had to retrench more than 16,000 employees. There were only 400 graduates in a staff compliment of 19,000. Posta is in even a worse situation. With a staff compliment of close to 6,000, you need in excess of 8 billion to retrench. You do not undertake such drastic moves without political will. In my view you are being simplistic on this issue. We shall take many years to sought out the mess created during KPTC time. This however is not an excuse not to do anything. There are reforms going on albeit slowly. You will need serious support from both the executive and parliament to implement sustainable interventions. Regards Ndemo.

Hi Daktari, You know my consistent stand on the issue of PCK (thanks Walu for bringing the typo to my attention) which is that retrenchment is not the solution what we need is to get them to work and this can only happen by increasing the volume of parcel traffic going through the post office. It is criminal to find a private company being allowed to setup shop within the premises of a government office to provide letter and parcel delivery while the same government keeps complaining about no work for its wholly owned company (visit Afya Centre). It is clear from the debacle with Telkom and Kenya Railways that retrenchment is not the solution therefore why would the ministry make a similar proposal to the cabinet for PCK, if I was in cabinet even I would reject the request. DHL has introduced an agency model around the country, they are mainly targeting cyber cafes (not waiting for the elusive Pasha centers) a model that PCK had tried to implement with the PostaSurf model which was frustrated by the board. Regards PS. Please search through my other posts on PCK to get a more thorough appreciation of my position (http://www.kictanet.or.ke/?s=robert+yawe+pck) also read the report presented to you by IBM on how to revive PCK. PS Ndemo, While we wait for the light bulb moment, can CCK fast track the issue of physical addresses and can County governments perhaps be roped in to help with this so that Posta can start delivering to our homes. Mucheru of Google is here they have the data on most streets its just to now get landlords and home owners to register with Posta to get official addresses. Some counties like mine, Kiambu, we can volunteer to pilot this. JG On Mon, Apr 22, 2013 at 7:44 PM, robert yawe <robertyawe@yahoo.co.uk> wrote:
Hi Daktari,
You know my consistent stand on the issue of PCK (thanks Walu for bringing the typo to my attention) which is that retrenchment is not the solution what we need is to get them to work and this can only happen by increasing the volume of parcel traffic going through the post office.

Hi Edith,
It is interesting that you bring this up as it goes back to the key issue here that we in ICT have absolutely no understanding or appreciation of how relevant PSK is to delivering e-commerce and until that happens the organisation will continue on a down hill spiral finally embedding itself in the ground.
What is even worse is that Dr. Ndemo is even more clueless than the current PMG about the relevance if PSK in delivering e-commerce solutions which is clear from their statements about how email is replacing the services offered by the postal service which cannot be any further from the truth.Â
Safaricom.Â

James, Let us stop lying to ourselves that we shall be having home deliveries soon, if we do not have the discipline to tell our contacts when we have changed phone numbers what is the chance that the location database will remain up to date the day after it is launched. JICA, Survey Department, NCBDA and the defunct City Council of Nairobi numbered the buildings in the CBD over 5 years ago and even generated a GPS map. The information remains under lock and key somewhere just like the IBM report done on PCK http://www.ict.go.ke/IBMTalentStudy/Postal%20Corporation%20of%20Kenya%20Stra.... Wouldn't it make more sense for us to first unlock this system and make it available to the proverbial iHub geeks before we start trying to mark the houses in Kibra and Mukuru kwa Njenga? Regards PS. Dr. Ndemo, I hear you....to undertake a proper re-structuring one needs political goodwill. You cannot do it on your own will. I think the key question here is that while we wait for political goodwill, what strategies need to be implemented to start generating more revenues for this organisation to keep it afloat even as the Executive and Parliament is persuaded to start a restructuring program.? This entity needs such a person who is very dynamic. Who and where is this person? They need to start like yesterday. ----- And Robert, be fair...stop calling people clueless.

Ndemo.
Hi Edith,
It is interesting that you bring this up as it goes back to the key issue here that we in ICT have absolutely no understanding or appreciation of how relevant PSK is to delivering e-commerce and until that happens the organisation will continue on a down hill spiral finally embedding itself in the ground.
What is even worse is that Dr. Ndemo is even more clueless than the current PMG about the relevance if PSK in delivering e-commerce solutions which is clear from their statements about how email is replacing the services offered by the postal service which cannot be any further from the truth.Â
I always ask, once I have ordered a pair of shoes online and made the payment electronically exactly how does the shoe get to me? Until 3D printers becoming cheaper than a DVD player there is only one answer to
Whata travesty and a lost opportunity. Two years ago I spent time working on a project to help Botswana Posts introduce their own mobile money product as a service. They had already (as part of their strategic plan) established partnership with Govt to handle payment of social grants (pensions, social security, welfare etc).... There are many other ways of being sustainable. Best regards, Brian On Mon, Apr 22, 2013 at 5:06 AM, Ali Hussein <ali@hussein.me.ke> wrote:

Yet despite the dire straits the state corporation seems to be in it still could reinvent itself. Posta is in dire need of re-inventing itself ala Deutsche Post which reverse took-over DHL and benefited from its logistics and savvy managerial skills. Is the semi-privatization of Posta Kenya imminent? Is it the only thing that can save it? Should the Government/Posta seriously look at this option? I dare say we must move poste haste (pun intended) or be confined to the fate of the US Postal Service which seems incapable of getting out of its morose state.

Kioko A few years ago some of the big multi-nationals banks closed alot of their branches...Then come a homegrown bank called Equity..The rest you know..The mult-national banks are now scampering to re-open their branches and add more. What changed? My take is that the business model designed by Equity made the difference. Posta has all the ingredients of an Equity except possibly the culture... Is this a candidate for a Reverse Takeover to 'buy' the right culture? Food for thought. Bernsoft :=) This is what lack of transparency, results in. How can something as basic as e-mail (as broken as it is for collaboration) not be utilized to improve accountability/performance in go.ke orgs? (Internal Web Portals - Discussion Board can be better utilized/accessed than email for Collaboration / Team Projects) A year ago when being traumatized with "duties" at the post office, I asked if we could pay electronically.
