On the flip side i don't mind the new development since it makes my decision making easier. What would be important for us all is to 1. Understand what the WhatsApp privacy updates really entail. In the age of fake news, a lot has been spread, even on WhatsApp and it is difficult to pinpoint the truth. 2. Why is FB releasing different updates for different regions? Europe is getting a different set of rules than the rest of us. Are our data protection laws as strong as GDPR? Good question Mwendwa:- 1.Different regions are getting different sets of rules because WhatsApp has to comply with the various sets of Privacy/ Data Protection rules in the different regions. For example in California they have to comply with the CCPA , in UK Data protection and in EU they must comply with the GDPR and so on. I think the question is not whether our DP Act is as strong as the GDPR but on enforcement and implementation. We have a great document. I just don't know what is happening in the Office of Our Data Commissioner Immaculate but I saw GG was there the other day, maybe she can tell us haha. 2. Among the data that will be shared is metadata (which is typically data about data like location, time etc..) So WhatsApp will share information such as Phone number, device ID, location, transaction data, product information and other user identifiers. Whether or not you have a Facebook account is iimaterial.
