Hi Listers,

Great insights.

Good question Mwendwa:-
1.Different regions are getting different sets of rules because WhatsApp has to comply with the various sets of Privacy/ Data Protection rules in the different regions.
For example in California they have to comply with the CCPA , in UK Data protection and in EU they must comply with the GDPR and so on. I think the question is not whether our DP Act is as strong as the GDPR but on enforcement and implementation. We have a great document. I just don't know what is happening in the Office of Our Data Commissioner Immaculate but I saw GG was there the other day, maybe she can tell us haha.

2. Among the data that will be shared is metadata (which is typically data about data like location, time etc..) So WhatsApp will share information such as Phone number, device ID, location, transaction data, product information and other user identifiers. Whether or not you have a Facebook account is iimaterial.

What would be important for us all is to
1. Understand what the WhatsApp privacy updates really entail. In the age of fake news, a lot has been spread, even on WhatsApp and it is difficult to pinpoint the truth.

2. Why is FB releasing different updates for different regions? Europe is getting a different set of rules than the rest of us. Are our data protection laws as strong as GDPR?

It would be good for FB to debunk all the theories going around

Ali and Barrack, I totally agree with you.

Lakini why are we only treating it as a matter of individual consent?

Will this become a new trend where tech monopolies will be baiting people with free products to a point their platforms become essential services, then boom! New strange updates.

Where does consumer protection come in.

@Barrack Otieno kabisa kaka.

So here's the thing. Wacha nifungue roho as GG keeps on saying.

I have been warning people for years that there's nothing for free. Facebook is a marketplace. And if you are not selling or buying you are the product. Plain and simple. Kwani hio platform ilijengwe na nini (how do you think the platform was built?) We have a saying in Kiswahili -

Ukiona vyaelea jua vimeundwa.

The choice is simple. Put up or ship out. If the Australian government has buckled to the muscle of Facebook who are we?

Morning Listers,

Looks like the train already left the station. I have noticed lately that when i discuss a product on Whatsapp, i see it on my Facebook timeline. On the flip side i don't mind the new development since it makes my decision making easier. Siri haiwekwi kwa simu ama namna gani @Ali Hussein

This is an interesting development. I can't understand what's going on in Menlo Park, California. On the face of it seems like its Facebook vs the World.

What gives? What are the algorithms and data telling them?

Greetings listers,

It looks like WhatsApp privacy updates are still with us, just postponed till 15th May. Check these links out:
KICTANet in partnership with FB will hold a webinar Tuesday on March 2nd, from 11am to 12.30 noon. The FB team will respond to questions that were raised earlier on  this list, and new ones that may arise as a result of these new updates.

We therefore invite you to ask your questions here starting tomorrow Tuesday February 23, 2020 to Thursday February 25, 2020. The questions will be curated and the FB team will respond to them during the webinar on Tuesday.

Here are a few questions to guide our discussions:
  1. 1. What trends are these updates going to set?
  2. These updates only apply in Europe because of the GDPR, yet our own data protection Act mirrors these regulations. What can we make of this?
  3. What are the implications of the privacy updates on harvesting the data and metadata for advertisement?
The floor is open!

Best regards.
