Update on National Optical Fiber Backbone Infrastructure (NOFBI)
Hallo Listers, Other the last couple of days there has been growing interest in the status of the government build National Optical Fiber Backbone Infrastructure. Since last week PS Dr. Ndemo and his team at the MOIC have been engaging operators in discussions to find the best way to maximize value on the government built NOFBI infrastructure. In summary the outcome of the meetings has been that; 1. NOFBI is accessible to all interested licensed operators who shall provide the last mile solutions to their customers. 2. A management committee comprising of various operators and government has been put in place to finalize on suitable pricing and ensure as many people as possible have access to the backbone infrastructure and ensure that it is eventually self-sustainable. 3. The management committee shall share quarterly reports on the progress It is the hope of all those involved that the use of this shared platform will be a contributing factor to the reduced costs of internet access. Congrats on this development and thank you for sharing the information. If trunk costs will come down and after almost 2 years of undersea fiber presence with reducing costs on STM capacities, are we finally going to see a huge drops in per mbit pricing for end users settle around 100usd for uncontended internet from the current 500-600usd? Indeed we are in interesting times then if we are able to achieve this. Rgds. :-) On Mon, Jul 25, 2011 at 5:51 PM, Fiona Asonga <tespok@tespok.co.ke> wrote:

Hi Fiona, Thanks for keeping us posted on the progress on the process of leveraging NOFBI, I would like to just raise 2 issues 1. In your report point 2 mentions government and licensed operators, how can the consumers participate? 2. Is it possible to get an up to date layout of NOFBI? Agreed. Serious content that should quickly be translated and uploaded to the opengovernment portal. Now for a serious question (not sure to who, but may Paul Kukubo could take it on as the CEO of ICT Board). I know for budgetory reasons that the fiber cannot be run through each and every town/county but any special reason why Bungoma Town was left out? 2010 Census Statistics showed that Bungoma county is the most populated after Nairobi and Kakamega in that order. That alone should be a good enough reason to extend this fiber there. Another one ofcourse is that Bungoma happens to be my Shags and I may want to access fiber from there - on the few ocassions that I show up there ;-). walu. --- On Fri, 7/29/11, Solomon Mbũrũ Kamau <solo.mburu@gmail.com> wrote: From: Solomon Mbũrũ Kamau <solo.mburu@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [kictanet] [KICTAnet] Update on National Optical Fiber Backbone Infrastructure (NOFBI) To: jwalu@yahoo.com Cc: "KICTAnet ICT Policy Discussions" <kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> Date: Friday, July 29, 2011, 3:59 PM Thanks Fiona for this. This is truly amazing that we have all this amount of optic Fiber coverage across the nation. Is there a possibility of knowing how each and sundry can take advantage of this huge resource? Harry, We have been having an awareness campaign but it seems nobody is listening. That is why we want to roll out the last mile so that at least we can utilize it for learning. Hello Bw PS, I suppose a number of us missed out on the updates on the NOFBI, but from the foregoing I believe most are more the wiser and enlightened now, and will be seeking to get more info on this. Are the Pasha and DVs feeding off the NOFBI?, if not they should be the first to get on board. Indeed it naturally should also come as best suited for institutions of learning... Who will distribute & sell bandwidth on the last mile...? Hi, Daktari, if by awareness you are referring to the advertisements being run in the media my KICTB they are ineffective due to the language and visuals being used. Its similar to doing an advert on the workings of a step-up transformer by KPLC to encourage people to use electricity. Can someone out there over lay this on the county boundary map, 3G/GPRS coverage and for my selfish need also include the post office locations. It would also be enlightening if we could also overlay the locations where the Meteorological Department has its weather capture instrument stations, not that they need high speed links to tell when we are experiencing drought like condition which is a prerequisite to people dying of hunger but just to see how wide spread they are laid. What amuses me is that there is absolutely no input from anyone in the public universities in these discussions. KENET I believe supplies all the universities with world class bandwidth but the most this bandwidth is used for is Facebook and Youtube and by characters like me to take advantage and download 7gb of chinese language learning material in an hour. Is it that no-one is aware/interested or is it not a priority? On Sat, Jul 30, 2011 at 12:44 PM, <bitange@jambo.co.ke> wrote:

That's unfortunate, as it would be great for such information to be linked to an authoritative online source, since anyone can create a map and send it as an email attachment. Many thanks for this.
Following up on Yawe's point, can we get a PDF map of NOFBI to the list? I had asked PS Ndemo for this at the Kenya IGF.
Many thanks if you can assist with this.

Hallo Listers,
Other the last couple of days there has been growing interest in the status of the government build National Optical Fiber Backbone Infrastructure. 3. The management committee shall share quarterly reports on the progress
It is the hope of all those involved that the use of this shared platform will be a contributing factor to the reduced costs of internet access.

That's unfortunate, as it would be great for such information to be linked to an authoritative online source, since anyone can create a map and send it as an email attachment.
Listers, any suggestion on the best online home for this map?
