Hi Grace, Someone has penned the following: http://goo.gl/yvooPb However, from where I sit, I think it's just the sentimental/emotional value that's being peddled. It's Kenyan product (really?? Which Kenyan did it?) and it's been living in exile, but now we've brought it home! Okay, that sounds quite negative so let me add.. I hope that clients will never see/hear "M-Pesa is experiencing delays. Please wait for 10 minutes and try again". Item number 2 in the referenced article seemed to want to touch on issues like this, but it doesn't expressly say why we used to get such delays when the old (G-1) system didn't actually hit it's peak limit. So maybe it was an issue with Internet traffic delays to Germany, which is now eliminated from the equation by the local hosting of the servers. Maybe this G-2 will be opened up for the other Telcos, something that has always been in contention. Item 3 in the referenced article wanted to talk about that, but ended up with unnecessary noise. Time will tell whether Safaricom will allow others to compete with it in its own platform. It makes sense to keep traffic local. It saves a lot of cash. It also improves the speed of transactions because of lower latency. Over and above this, we can't claim to be a global hub of innovation if we can't keep servers running. Hi Grace,
Someone has penned the following: http://goo.gl/yvooPb
However, from where I sit, I think it's just the
sentimental/emotional
value that's being peddled.

Is this to say the system is not being future proofed with the intent to go global, since in this case the physical location of said servers should not be an issue. When it comes to cost, i believe any internet traffic cost savings will be translated to the maintainance and running of the local tier 2 data centers set up for this infrastructure. Am sure they are running more than one for this. -- ./ken

I think the broader issue here is Safaricom is a Kenyan company - based in Kenya. And the servers were in the UK. That is what all this is about. On Tue, Apr 21, 2015 at 9:28 AM, simiyu mse via kictanet < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:

True that. Majority of users are in Kenya. For now. Would really be interesting to see how this affects the plans to go global especially if they want to tap into the remittances business and Vodafone has global ambitions for Mpesa... Ali, MPESA has gone global but not as a Safaricom product since the IP is owned by Vodafone. MPESA is in India, South Africa, Tanzania, Afghanistan, e.t.c. I am not an IP expert, but forget Safaricom ever getting anything out of it from the global market. Vodafone has that in their pockets. ______________________ Mwendwa Kivuva, Nairobi, Kenya "There are some men who lift the age they inhabit, till all men walk on higher ground in that lifetime." - Maxwell Anderson

By having a separate M-Pesa server and control over the same, allows Safaricom to vastly improve what M-Pesa can do, and also experiment a lot with the local market. Kenya is more mature than other countries in M-Pesa products - Safaricom is able to specifically create new services for Kenya. Secondly, Safaricom's running of M-Pesa servers enables the firm to build its cloud skills, and also to bring down the cost of cloud solutions to some extent, in my opinion. After all, skills and capacity can be shared with M-Pesa, with fixed costs coming down due to M-Pesa's uptake. Dennis Safaricom needs to outsource cloud to Angani (disclosure: I'm a fan) :) Seriously though, for as long as Mpesa is under the control of Safaricom/Vodafone it will nor grow beyond Kenya. Safaricom uses Mpesa as a big stick against its competitors and I'm not sure that's the way to grow a brand.
