Hi Ali
Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) published a public notice in the Daily News on 1st June, 2016 that reminds us that all business entities registered in the country should have and use dot(.) tz domain names.
The notice stated that this requirement is in order to comply with the regulatory requirements and to contribute to the national revenue. However, the notice does not give a deadline to do so or limit the use of other domain endings. Therefore we assume that if you own a .com, .net, .org, or any other domain ending then you are required to register a respective .tz domain name.
Extreme Web Technologies is the top performing accredited registrar of tzNIC. The price of domain registration for .TZ is TZS 25,000/- per annum. If you are using a .com, .net, .org or any other extensions, please get in touch with us so we can assist you to acquire your .TZ domain and setup the redirections if required. You can continue using your current domain name for your email communications.

I may not think forcing that is a good idea. But building awareness and positively sensitizing people may be better. In the long run already established websites may face a battle with the new way they may need to rebrand.. On 3 Jun 2016 10:42 am, "Ali Hussein via kictanet" < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:

Here is the link to the Tanzanian regulations: http://www.tanzania.go.tz/egov_uploads/documents/Electronic%20Communication%... 10. Any public or business entity in Tanzania shall register and use domains with country’s ccTLD, the dot-tz. (2) Dot-tz Electronic Communications shall be used for all official correspondences unless where proved technically not possible. (3) The Tanzania Network Information Centre (tzNIC) shall serve both as the technical and administrative Manager of dot-tzccTLD. Form the above 1. Does it mean it's a MUST for all businesses go register .tz domain, or they can register at their discretion? My reading is that it's at business discretion. From the newspaper notice, the reason given for businesses to register .tz is to "contribute to the national revenue", and not to help businesses get online. This will make business view this as additional taxation rather than a value added service. 2. Is there a country apart from .tz that is doing this? What is then the purpose of having TLDs that are not country specific then? And I dont think countries should target a space as open and free as the world wide web and regulate it - and the fact that they can do it for revenue reasons make it even sound worse. I like the Kenyan system. Let it be voluntary. Let policy and other actors create the case for having a .ke domain name. @John Gitau, but what is the point of a domain name for a business/company? Why would for example, a holding company need a mandatory online presence? 2016-06-03 13:27 GMT+03:00 John Gitau via kictanet < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke>:

Its not mandatory it can be optional. Most companies might not know they have a .ke or even online presence option. Same way they ask for my p.o box that i never use but is required, they also ask for an email address among other data that i find useless. Why not offer up a domain as part of the process especially now that company registration is online and a simple api or whatever check/call can be performed to reserve the company name plus a domain. It should obviously not be mandatory but we should definitely encourage it and offer it as an option. Jg On 3 Jun 2016 12:40, "Grace Mutung'u (Bomu)" <nmutungu@gmail.com> wrote:

IMHO registering a .ke should be builti into the company registration process and the cost added therein complete with default emails like info@domain created and forwarded to the primary address you give as part of the registration.

Hi Ali
Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) published a public notice in the Daily News on 1st June, 2016 that reminds us that *all business entities registered in the country should have and use dot(.) tz domain names.*
*Extreme Web Technologies is the top performing accredited registrar of tzNIC.* The price of domain registration for .TZ is TZS 25,000/- per annum. If you are using a .com, .net, .org or any other extensions, please get in touch with us so we can assist you to acquire your .TZ domain and setup the redirections if required. You can continue using your current domain name for your email communications.

Listers, It's strange that many do not see the positive side of the proposal by John. I do and if KENIC can step in and offer something like this, it is really a good start. We need to aggressively grow the Kenyan online presence and space in an identifiable manner. We really really need this for the near and long term future for sure. May I also suggest that basic information on what is the Internet and how it works be introduced somewhere with the primary school curriculum. IMHO...
2. The regulation mandating all "official correspondences" - I assume this means "government entities correspondence" to be on .tz is highly welcomed.

Here is the full public notice as published by the Daily News:
Best Regards, Mohsin Sumar, CEO Extreme Web Technologies Ltd
