Good point. Definitely food for thought. I'm sure Mpesa has a reason to
go back to cards when the very nature of mobile money is card less. Ali, how I understood it is that if your phone is NFC enabled, you would not need the card. You would just swipe the phone. Again, the card is helpful when you are outside network coverage area, like when you travel abroad.
This will definitely be something to watch keenly.

I wonder if the card will be as fees free to the customer as visa.
Therein, would be an advantage. For now there are times when paying through M-pesa is charged and it is quite inconvenient to send an SMS to find out
But the bigger question would be whether this the real future or the full potential of mobile money vis a vis Blockchains... Regards,

Hi All Just to bring some blockchain background into this chat: Blockchain would not replace the last-mile POS terminals or NFC or credit-card (yet), but rather help run the infrastructure behind it. Visa <http://www.coindesk.com/visa-europe-blockchain-no-longer-a-choice/> (also see here <https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/visa-chooses-india-blockchain-development/>) and Mastercard <http://uk.businessinsider.com/mastercards-garry-lyons-davos-fintech-mastercardlabs-blockchain-bitcoin-2016-1> are some of the largest investors in the technology. So, a card is fine -- but what is the database behind it? Will the card's database be centralized in a single country and only work with domestic terminals -- like the Verve Card by Interswitch in Nigeria? Verve works AWESOME in Nigeria....but nowhere else. The Verve network also does not accept non-Nigerian cards...for any of you who have tried unsuccessfully to swipe your Kenyan Bank's Visa card at the 5+ POS terminals at any Lagos restaurant that advertises "Visa accepted here." There are some really cool Bitcoin cards <https://www.shiftpayments.com/>that use Visa/Mastercard networks for last-mile acceptance...but you can top-up these cards very cheaply using any currency in the world. So - great that Safaricom wants to improve the last-mile experience...but will they own the FX/Fees/Banking options to top-up balance? If these cards work outside of Kenya -- what kind of fees/FX will they have? Who will manage that global treasury and switching between networks? xElizabeth On Fri, Jul 22, 2016 at 11:17 AM, John Gitau via kictanet < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:

NFC relies on an entire ecosystem. Phones, PDQS/POS terminals are part of it. Great discussion. Last mile is all about connectivity. Not too sure the ROI for a card by safaricom who already have a vibrant agent network, sticky or loyal customers. Today only there are 2-4% transactions on card. The question is what are they trying to solve with this initiative as we also do not event have a wide spread of ATMs. In my personal opinion this is a step back, I think they really need to rethink on this, but they should look at improving the experience on Mpesa. There are many applicable technologies, the last mile connect is the problem Safaricom has solved, but to build into the network of expensive PDQ machines does make sense if you have already replaced them with a $10 - $15 unit. Wow.. What a step back Safaricom please rethink, reset otherwise carry on. Thanks, Best Regards, Baiju

Good point. Definitely food for thought. I'm sure Mpesa has a reason to go back to cards when the very nature of mobile money is card less.
Ali, how I understood it is that if your phone is NFC enabled, you would not need the card. You would just swipe the phone. Again, the card is helpful when you are outside network coverage area, like when you travel abroad.
This will definitely be something to watch keenly.

Hi Listers, Maybe Safaricom do not have the skills for launch and manage a mobile app as they have been too busy photo copying ideas and outsourcing. Here it is not cannibalising but going after the banks card business which today is less then 2.5% of the transactional value. Again, my please to Safaricom management to review the project, and if they need help in thinking it through I am happy to facilitate, this is called the looking back effect. Or is there another motive of providing ID, Drivers Licence, Health insurance and further capture all the transactions that the FI's are doing currently. CBK, please review and check if this is the way forward for the least regulated money transaction service in Kenya. Best Regards, Baiju

Baju I agree,
I really don't think I want another card in my wallet. They are just too many, right from loyalty cards by various franchises to debit and credit cards. We need a disruptor that will negate the need for all these and that will be the future of innovation.

Thanks,

NFC relies on an entire ecosystem. Phones, PDQS/POS terminals are part of it.
I said a long time ago that mobile payments would only be global via a standard based technology like NFC Vs a vendor driven service such as mpesa.
I am happy to see Safaricom is now ready to support the standard based approach to mobile payments too.
