Baju I agree,

I really don't think I want another card in my wallet. They are just too many, right from loyalty cards by various franchises to debit and credit cards. We need a disruptor that will negate the need for all these and that will be the future of innovation.

Great discussion.

Last mile is all about connectivity. Not too sure the ROI for a card by safaricom who already have a vibrant agent network, sticky or loyal customers. Today only there are 2-4% transactions on card.

The question is what are they trying to solve with this initiative as we also do not event have a wide spread of ATMs.

In my personal opinion this is a step back, I think they really need to rethink on this, but they should look at improving the experience on Mpesa.

There are many applicable technologies, the last mile connect is the problem Safaricom has solved, but to build into the network of expensive PDQ machines does make sense if you have already replaced them with a $10 - $15 unit.

Wow.. What a step back Safaricom please rethink, reset otherwise carry on.

Thanks,

Best Regards,
Baiju

NFC relies on an entire ecosystem.  Phones, PDQS/POS terminals are part of it.

I said a long time ago that mobile payments would only be global via a standard based technology like NFC Vs a vendor driven service such as mpesa.

I am happy to see Safaricom is now ready to support the standard based approach to mobile payments too.

Ali,  how I understood it is that if your phone is NFC enabled, you would not need the card. You would just swipe the phone. Again, the card is helpful when you are outside network coverage area, like when you travel abroad.
