Your Contact Lists and Privacy
Good Day all, Do you pause to ask yourself if you're violating the agency and privacy of individuals in your contact list even in apps that need them to function? A la social media apps. https://restofworld.org/2022/how-truecaller-built-a-billion-dollar-id-data-e... Regards, Adrian Teri
Adrian I stopped using Truecaller ages ago...That however, doesn't stop people who don't know me, calling me and knowing exactly who I am, including my social media handles. Very spooky. This is one app I'd be happy to see completely banned. I'm, however, really curious, how a Swedish company, who's country is a member of the EU, continues to operate in this murky Data Privacy Violation space.... Ali, The article points out that they have been able to operate in India because that country has yet to pass its data protection law. If I remember correctly, the issue has been whether to have a national statute or to allow each state to have its own data protection laws.... But the data brokerage industry is huugeee as this article shows... https://themarkup.org/privacy/2021/09/30/theres-a-multibillion-dollar-market... @Ali Hussein <ahussein@kictanet.or.ke> I beg to differ a bit. We should not sacrifice Technology and innovation on the altar of regulation. While on one hand I appreciate the role of regulation, there is a need to apply the same with wisdom. Technology (Hardware and Software) are a means to an end and not an end in themselves. The question I would ask is does the application or piece of hardware add value to end users or not. Of course most of these applications and hardware have business models built around them but then again to what extent are end users benefitting. @John Walubengo <jwalubengo@kictanet.or.ke> I would be hesitant to apply a one size fits all approach to regulation. The European Union is at a very different level in so far as penetration and adoption of Information and Communication Technologies is concerned. The same applies to America and most parts of Asia Pacific. I would prefer a more evidence based approach to regulatory development with clear concerns from end users. Thank you Best Regards On Mon, 4 Apr 2022, 9:14 am Ali Hussein via KICTANet, < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:

Barrack This really has nothing to do with regulation but everything to do with a Privacy First Ethos. Let's be clear, if tech companies had simply respected our privacy and asked us for permission (opt-in as opposed to opt-out) we would not have been in this situation where we are asking governments the world over to intervene. I appreciate that privacy concerns are a personal matter and not necessarily the governments' concern. However, it is for this reason that privacy should have been respected. Because it has not, the government has stepped in.
