Joe Mucheru was vetted today by Parliament for the position of CS at the ministry if ICT. His achievements are major. It is good to see youthful people takeup leadership positions in the country, especially at Cabinet level. Joe is a man who believes in himself. He addressed issues very articulately and has good grasp of the industry. I liked the way he addressed issues of dominance by Safaricom and realisation of the Konza dream. On Safaricom, he stated in many words that there is no need to stiffle our companies, which in the larger world view are actually not that big. There is room for growth and ensuring our companies cross the border and operate in other markets. He stated his commitment to ensure fair competition in the industry and infrastructure sharing. This is what we have been advocating for at Kictanet. On Konza, he stated that he is committed to ensure the project goes through. His view was that there are not that many large ICT companies in Kenya. Many investors come around with bagloads of money, like $20m but they leave frustrated because of lack of investment opportunities. Konza will be that stepping stone for startups and entrepreneurs to get into the big league. I believe if he puts his energy in the ministry, we will see tremendous change in the sector. I am banking on Mucheru taking after Ndemo in terms of passion and commitment to improve the ICTs in this country. But being a Kenyan, I wonder if he will get the support he needs to see all this through with a govt that is already too tainted. Okay, call me a pessimist on that govt bit, but on the Mucheru bit, I am very sure he can deliver if given a free hand. I will pray for his success. We all need to, as we've prayed for this for so long. We got Ndemo but they couldn't allow him to continue when everyone felt he should have been let to. Instead they dragged him to court, right? No young guy with plenty of life ahead of him should accept current government cabinet appointment at this juncture. Mucheru with all his verve and vigour will be checkmated. Wait until the free laptop thing is thrust on him. He should have negotiated to commence with the next government. 2 year stint, in a smelly environment....nothing tangible except the smell. Do you know an ex- politician (forget the semantics that CS are technocrats) reabsorbed successfully in private sector? He will also be lucky to come out without EACC visiting his kitchen. K. Agreed Machuhi. But also I think as a country we really also need people who will break the culture the public sector has, and I think this is a calculated risk Joe can take. His previous porflio speaks for itself, so if he is caught up in an issue it will not be so hard to figure out its a setup. He may end up in private sector by virtue of the fact that people know how things work in the sector. So I think this is a well calculated risk that is very much needed. Sorry guys but this sort of talk is what takes us backwards. If the best and brightest don't accept to serve the country then who will? We are left with the rejects. We must all support the people who accept to serve in government as long as they are doing the right thing and keep vigilant when they lose focus because as humans we are not perfect and we should strive to continuously improve. His achievements are major. It is good to see youthful people takeup leadership positions in the country, especially at Cabinet level. Joe is a man who believes in himself. He addressed issues very articulately and has good grasp of the industry.
I liked the way he addressed issues of dominance by Safaricom and realisation of the Konza dream.
On Safaricom, he stated in many words that there is no need to stiffle our companies, which in the larger world view are actually not that big. There is room for growth and ensuring our companies cross the border and operate in other markets. He stated his commitment to ensure fair competition in the industry and infrastructure sharing. This is what we have been advocating for at Kictanet.
On Konza, he stated that he is committed to ensure the project goes through. His view was that there are not that many large ICT companies in Kenya. Many investors come around with bagloads of money, like $20m but they leave frustrated because of lack of investment opportunities. Konza will be that stepping stone for startups and entrepreneurs to get into the big league.
I believe if he puts his energy in the ministry, we will see tremendous change in the sector. Too bad the current regime has less than two years in power.

This is what we have been advocating for at Kictanet.
On Konza, he stated that he is committed to ensure the project goes through. His view was that there are not that many large ICT companies in Kenya. Many investors come around with bagloads of money, like $20m but they leave frustrated because of lack of investment opportunities. Konza will be that stepping stone for startups and entrepreneurs to get into the big league.
I believe if he puts his energy in the ministry, we will see tremendous change in the sector. Too bad the current regime has less than two years in power.

Heavily resound Ali's comments. I actually consider any individual who takes up a role in public service after serving successful stints in corporate as a brave move. These roles are not a walk in the park, and involves a lot of balancing acts. We need Joe and anyone else from Corporate to be successful, there is a feeling politicians are much better in cabinet. This needs to change. They have to succeed. And they need us to back them up. Good people My understanding of that amount is that most of it will come from investors. Government's job is to provide the seed funding.
