Permission Marketing and misuse of customer data by Telcos
Dear All I woke up this morning to find myself registered by a Telco for a service I do not want. [5:59 AM, 11/14/2016] +254 713 601113: You have successfully subscribed to the SKIZA Tunes service.Your password to log on to www.skiza.safaricom.com is xxxx. [5:59 AM, 11/14/2016] +254 713 601113: Your SKIZA Tune <Customized Skiza Tune> was set successfully. [5:59 AM, 11/14/2016] +254 713 601113: You have successfully downloaded SKIZA Tune Customized Skiza Tune .The tune will be renewed at KES 1.00 daily. To delete dial *811#. I thought these things shouldn't happen anymore? Why would Safaricom tell me that I have subscribed to SKIZA Tune when I did not? And proceed to tell me they will deduct Kshs. 1 per day for this? And if I want to unsubscribe/delete then I should dial *811#? Who gave them the permission to subscribe me in the first place? Maybe my phone was hacked and someone registered me by mistake? At this point I'm giving Safaricom the benefit of doubt since just two weeks ago the CEO, Bob Collymore gave us his assurance that such behavior by PRSPs is frowned upon by his organisation. Very unfair, especially when they relegate the responsibility of unearthing if it is a scam to the consumers! On 14 Nov 2016 06:08, "Ali Hussein via kictanet" < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:

Looks like this isn't an isolated event, but could point to a more far reaching abuse of consumer rights. Who gave them the permission to subscribe me in the first place?

At this point I'm giving Safaricom the benefit of doubt since just two weeks

Safaricom recently enrolled me into a games premium service where I was unknowingly being deducted airtime daily for playing games. After complaining and throwing quite some tantrums, I got a refund of 1,000 shillings. I got thinking how much more money I have lost over the years in other deductions that am unaware of. Dear Listers, I have also fallen victim to the gaming charges which were apparently approved online. The following must happen:- 1. Regular updates of all the services one is subscribed to and it should not be the responsibility of the user to inquire. 2. All other suppliers send regular updates on charges for services/goods consumed, there is absolutely no reason why charges should be made blindly. Telcos el al are not exempt. 3. Failure to the above then we have the right to take legal action against all the parties involved in this rip off. There's clearly an abuse of consumer rights and misuse of customers' private information. Kind regards, Rosemary Koech-Kimwatu. I thought these things shouldn't happen anymore?
Why would Safaricom tell me that I have subscribed to SKIZA Tune when I did

if I want to unsubscribe/delete then I should dial *811#?
Who gave them the permission to subscribe me in the first place?
Maybe my phone was hacked and someone registered me by mistake?
At this point I'm giving Safaricom the benefit of doubt since just two weeks
ago the CEO, Bob Collymore gave us his assurance that such behavior by PRSPs
is frowned upon by his organisation.

Rosemary and all Nancy Matimu, Safaricom's Consumer Head of Products has been super responsive to my complaints and I'm happy to say that all the subscriptions that I had purported to have subscribed to have been deleted and monies refunded. Further more Nancy has promised to:- 1. Deal with such complaints with her team. 2. Promised to look into rogue activity by their Content Partners and take stern action against any culprits. 3. Hold a meeting with all their partners at the end of this month to sensitize them and warn them against such rogue activities. I'd encourage all of us to engage her team in rooting out this illegal activity. We need more of these interactions between consumers and companies like Safaricom. Thank you all. 1.

Hi Ali, I miss the days when Safaricom led by the CEO would engage the public directly on issues such as this. The response is good but not different from our colleagues from COFEK which has left us confused, i think matters of public concern require a public response. The institutions also stand to gain when they openly engage with the public. What is still unclear is whom do you go to when you have such an issue. Based on the conversation on the list, there are many aggrieved parties who have been sorted out in varied ways. Nancy Matimu, Safaricom's Consumer Head of Products has been super responsive to my complaints and I'm happy to say that all the subscriptions that I had purported to have subscribed to have been deleted and monies refunded. Further more Nancy has promised to:-
