I actually think that the AU's position - where they prefer a community based approach towards activating the domain - is a much better, more inclusive and transparent way. I also agree that AFTLD can and should take the initiative to show leadership on the matter, of course, working closely with other stakeholder groups and organisations like AfriNIC, AfNOG etc... Brian and all, Indeed the AU's position sounds more inclusive and transparent; it's a community based endeavour which gives back to the community through capacity development; And in fact all current african Internet related organizations (The so called AF* including the AfTLD) have crafted the original concept paper on dotafrica in 2006 (www.dotafrica.org) and/or have been kept in the loop; Even the african business is being called upon to contribute. All, So when this particular 'controversial' lady was making an 'AU statement' doesn't it mean she must have been pushed by someone? I'm sure there are more who have may have wanted to bring about the positions of Africawide bodies but again, they use the fence instead of the door. Were her 'recommedations, suggestions' or whatever, adapted during EAIGF in UG? No, not adopted. We had to caution against seeking adoption for an initiative that has not followed the EA-IGF process...using a bottom up approach to present issues/ideas at the national IGFs before it is

Is it true that AU has consented/endorsed Sophia Bekele's push for this? I know that she is a very controversial figure and has made wild claims of support in the past.
Apparently this issue came up last week at the East African IGF in Uganda - she was there and tried to claim legitimacy but ended up being outrightly rejected and received a "dressing up" from most of the delegates there....
