Listers, Can anyone confirm that airtel charges ksh 3 (is it per minute or seconds?) for international calls? Despite the hype, this is not the reality from my recent painful experience. What role does CCK play in ensuring consumers get what they are promised? Edith

This tariff doesn't apply to all international calls, Edith - KES3 is only for a number of countries, including the US. The other tariffs are KES20 and KES30 per minute. The attached brief - recommendation 6 clearly points to the need to publish comparative pricing to assist consumers compare and select operators. Blanket advertising (without revealing the 'fine print") certainly confuses the consumer! I trust that CCK will do something about this recommendation - it also needs to be in Kiswahili and via different ICT channels not just the web. I rest my case! Edith, I don't remember the exact details of the print campaign anymore, but I think it was actually stated somewhere on the ad. Weren't these tariffs actually advertised as KES3 calls to the US, China etc? Someone jog my memory. Also, it's not that complicated a website. I just googled 'Airtel Kenya tariffs' and was two clicks away from the link. Macharia Gaitho, today, you win. You can stick an extra typo in the next Nation and I won't point it out! :) Take your pick: a gun-totting police man? A curved niche? A greenbuck? In mobile service delivery, you don't invoke tariff competition. Each operator must find a niche in the abundantly available market, as I a matter of experience. That is rule one. Rule two - a network operator cannot afford to offer free calls. Your switch would freeze within minutes and it would take up to a week or more to clean up the system memory depending on the size of subscriber base, and/or if you are cleaning manually, during which time your customers would be looking for service elsewhere. We all learn through experience! Hon. James Rege Sent from my iPad On 25 Oct 2011, at 15:40, Edith Adera <eadera@idrc.or.ke> wrote:
