Listers, Over the past two weeks we have had animated discussions on various lists regarding the laptop project that is to be implemented by the Government. Usage Skills:- just basics of operating the gadget, turn on/off, load basic programs such as typing, drawing, etc 2. I would want to imagine the core skills are the basic literacies as indicated by Walubengo - mainly covering Mathematical literacy (or Numeracy), information literacy(including reading and writing) and computer/digital literacy. Of course depending on how these basic literacies are taught other literacies can be implied (for example environmental, cultural). Many thanks Walu for setting the ball rolling Jaco and James make equally interesting interventions. From a laymans perspective in class one i would like to teach the child to pay attention as well as have some structured way of thinking and solving problems as such the child should a) Be able to listen b) Be able to engage in problem solving c) Be able to communicate his thoughts and idea from mind to paper or any other platform We also need to have in mind the short attention span of the child and look at ways of making the lessons more exciting. Looks like Listers are still waking up from their weekend and so I will take the opportunity to be the first to shoot my ideas on what we skills/knowledge expect the kids to have.
1. Usage Skills:- just basics of operating the gadget, turn on/off, load basic programs such as typing, drawing, etc 2. Searching skills:- ability to "google" around the devices for specific items - very important in a world with an overload of information. 3. Elementary Skills:- the NON-ICT stuff, we still have an obligation to teach the kids reading, writing, and numerical skills and so the question is how can ICTs support this elementary skill build-up.

Over the past two weeks we have had animated discussions on various lists regarding the laptop project that is to be implemented by the Government. The outgoing permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Communication Dr. Bitange Ndemo and his education counterpart Prof. Godia attempted to join the discussion but could not provide substantive response since the discussion was not structured. As stakeholders in the ICT sector, we have decided to hold a five day online discussion to gather views in a structured manner. This will then be synthesized during a face to face meeting that will be hosted by Strathmore University. We expect the Cabinet Secretaries for Information and Communication, Education and their Principal Secretaries to join us in the face to face meeting.
This discussion will take place over a five day period and will be as follows:

Well, as I said in a different post some time back, I have a child in Class 1. He has also been using a computer for more than 2 years actively. Everytime he gets a gadget, he is excited to try and explore it to see what is in it for him. Lately, I have shown him how to save his work and how to fish it out later if he needs to work on it again. Interestingly, when he learned to do this he wrote a piece about President Uhuru and its pretty obvious why he sees a connection to him! The one thing I know is that children like playing. So the content that they need is the same content that they learn at school, presented in a playful manner. This makes the learning fun. The child learns while thinking that they are playing. The use of technology is always to give us a better solution to something that we are already doing. So, if you are teaching a child math, use a computer and make that process easier and fun so that the technology makes the child learn better. That kills two birds with one stone. He also learns the how to navigate the computer and in the process learns how everything works together. Because he is "playing" with the mouse every day, he knows what a mouse is and what its used for. He learns keyboarding skills and the different keys. Looks like Listers are still waking up from their weekend and so I will take the opportunity to be the first to shoot my ideas on what we skills/knowledge expect the kids to have.
1. Usage Skills:- just basics of operating the gadget, turn on/off, load basic programs such as typing, drawing, etc 2. Searching skills:- ability to "google" around the devices for specific items - very important in a world with an overload of information. 3. Elementary Skills:- the NON-ICT stuff, we still have an obligation to teach the kids reading, writing, and numerical skills and so the question is how can ICTs support this elementary skill build-up.

Over the past two weeks we have had animated discussions on various lists regarding the laptop project that is to be implemented by the Government. The outgoing permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Communication Dr. Bitange Ndemo and his education counterpart Prof. Godia attempted to join the discussion but could not provide substantive response since the discussion was not structured. As stakeholders in the ICT sector, we have decided to hold a five day online discussion to gather views in a structured manner. This will then be synthesized during a face to face meeting that will be hosted by Strathmore University. We expect the Cabinet Secretaries for Information and Communication, Education and their Principal Secretaries to join us in the face to face meeting.
This discussion will take place over a five day period and will be as follows: 1. Day 1: What Knowledge/Skills do we expect std 1 Pupils to acquire (Learning objectives and outcomes) 2. Day 2: What Educational Content would support the Knowledge Objectives above(examples of educ. content/software used) 3. Day 3: How would this be delivered and assessed? Thanks Jaco, agreed, It appears the greatest challenge we have might be to define the type of content that would need to be plugged into the class one curriculum for example what was presented by Lucy, any experiences or best practices from UNESCO that we may want to look at from other countries in this respect? Well, as I said in a different post some time back, I have a child in Class 1. He has also been using a computer for more than 2 years actively. Everytime he gets a gadget, he is excited to try and explore it to see what is in it for him. Lately, I have shown him how to save his work and how to fish it out later if he needs to work on it again. Interestingly, when he learned to do this he wrote a piece about President Uhuru and its pretty obvious why he sees a connection to him!
The one thing I know is that children like playing. So the content that they need is the same content that they learn at school, presented in a playful manner. This makes the learning fun. The child learns while thinking that they are playing. The use of technology is always to give us a better solution to something that we are already doing. So, if you are teaching a child math, use a computer and make that process easier and fun so that the technology makes the child learn better. That kills two birds with one stone.
He also learns the how to navigate the computer and in the process learns how everything works together. Because he is "playing" with the mouse every day, he knows what a mouse is and what its used for. He learns keyboarding skills and the different keys. Basically, he becomes familiar to technology without realizing it.

Well, as I said in a different post some time back, I have a child in Class 1. He has also been using a computer for more than 2 years actively. Everytime he gets a gadget, he is excited to try and explore it to see what is in it for him. Lately, I have shown him how to save his work and how to fish it out later if he needs to work on it again. Interestingly, when he learned to do this he wrote a piece about President Uhuru and its pretty obvious why he sees a connection to him!
The one thing I know is that children like playing. So the content that they need is the same content that they learn at school, presented in a playful manner. This makes the learning fun. The child learns while thinking that they are playing. The use of technology is always to give us a better solution to something that we are already doing. So, if you are teaching a child math, use a computer and make that process easier and fun so that the technology makes the child learn better. That kills two birds with one stone.
He also learns the how to navigate the computer and in the process learns how everything works together. Because he is "playing" with the mouse every day, he knows what a mouse is and what its used for. He learns keyboarding skills and the different keys. Basically, he becomes familiar to technology without realizing it.

1. Usage Skills:- just basics of operating the gadget, turn on/off, load basic programs such as typing, drawing, etc 2. Searching skills:- ability to "google" around the devices for specific items - very important in a world with an overload of information. 3. Elementary Skills:- the NON-ICT stuff, we still have an obligation to teach the kids reading, writing, and numerical skills and so the question is how can ICTs support this elementary skill build-up.

Cyber schools has developed content based on Kenyan curriculum. CFSK got training in developing multimedia content and KIE has been funded for years (I think) by CCK to develop content - what became of that effort?
