Longonot Erruption
There have been reports in media about a looming eruption of Mt. Longonot, including localised earthquakes with the ground having huge cracks. Today morning, the Mai Mahiu - Naivasha road has been closed due to huge cracks on the road rendering it impassable. My question is whether the country's disaster organs are prepared to handle the disaster, and what can be expected from the eruption, in terms of area affected, and earth movements and their locality? -- with Regards: blog.denniskioko.com <http://www.denniskioko.com/>
Very valid point. Africa is known to have poor disaster preparedness mechanisms. Though I am of the opinion that building resilience to natural disaster may actually mitigate the post disaster effects. This ranging from loss of life to livelihoods. Kenya's disaster portfolio is mainly droughts and floods yet is one of the disasters that can be prevented by building resilience. But i think efforts are in place to help the country build resilience, such as the National Drought Management Authority. On 18 May 2012 09:03, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

Dennis, Do they exist? I hardly see any preparedness in most cases. And if they do and are on this list, can they explain to us their challenges and limitations so we can possibly understand why there is always reactions after events rather than pro-actions? Maybe they are totally handicapped, you never know...... The geologists in UoN have apparently ruled out an eruption but the area beneath Longonot has active magmatic systems beneath it. Sent from my iPhone On 18 May 2012, at 14:28, "Gilda Odera" <godera@skyweb.co.ke> wrote:

I think I had read somewhere that they had evacuated people living in the surrounding areas some time last week. What was interesting was the debate- one group said it was not geological movements and that is was simply effects of the heavy rains while another said it was... I wonder how well financed these organs are to handle any disasters.....and if they are, how they equip themselves. And how have they adopted the use of ICT for disaster preparedness? I really wonder! Our geology department is one of the most understaffed and under-funded. You can't blame them. Our special programs ministry cannot settle a handful of IDPs even after taxpayer's money was alocated in the budget, five years after PEV. Geology is nowhere near their minds. And finally ... Our top universities concentrate more on "fast moving courses as goodies" otherwise called "FMCG", thus there is little or no research on such issues. I'm just wondering where we will lay the blame if an eruption occurs, God forbid. On 18/05/2012, Gilda Odera <godera@skyweb.co.ke> wrote:

@kivuva, there is prime real estate somewhere between the junction, the showground and Kenya science. Can we hive off a portion, put up a business park and use rental income to finance "part" of the operations? On Fri, May 18, 2012 at 9:36 PM, Kivuva <Kivuva@transworldafrica.com> wrote:
