Just how easy is it to do SIM Swap? Seems like the chaps at Mulot bado wanafanya ile kitu. Story below from a recent complaint on Safcom's FB page today: Safaricom PLC you people will loose customers because of this sim swap thing. On 11th April 2023 at around 9:30am, I was at work when all of a sudden my phone's network went off.I couldn't neither make nor receive any calls or messages. I tried restarting the phone all to no avail, I just assumed it was a network error and put the phone on my bag.During lunch break I went home to my daughter who tried all tactics but still nothing. That's when we called customer care and were informed to visit the nearest safaricom shop. We went to Safaricom Nyali,City Mall. That's when I was shocked to hear that my line has been replaced and the following has happened :- 1. Kcb mpesa loan of 79,600 was taken 2. 30,063 was withdrawn from mshwari 3.Mshwari loan of 29,000 was taken 4.Fuliza of 2950 also taken 5.3600 was withdrawn via mobile banking 6.Mpesa balance of 58,525 All this collectively sent to one Dorica Manono and Evans Gucho. These are people I do not know. I reported to Nyali police station under OB number 35/11/04/2023 , I was later informed that the sim swap happened in Mulot area in Bomet. How is that possible yet I stay in Mombasa? KCB and Mshwari are on my neck to pay the said loans.Intrest is already accruing. Some of the cash are for chamas. I tried following up but nothing. My question is , how safe is my money on Safaricom? I need this issue sorted as soon as possible.I can't loose over 200,000 just like that , with this economy.NO!!!!!

This is a very unfortunate story. Maybe we should all minimize the pesa we leave on our phones. But the Regulator should insist on Safaricom investing heavily in a Cybersecurity Department beyond what they have that is fully staffed with Security Officers (Police) who can investigate and ensure prosecution of these criminals. You can’t convince me these thugs operate on their own, there must be insider collusion. Almost became a victim but thank God I disconnected the phone before thugs could swap my sim. I called Safaricom ASAP and told them “These thugs had too much info on my transactions, they must be Safaricom insiders or outsiders with access to all my records” Sending someone who has lost thousands to the police is COLD! Our service agreement is with Safaricom not police and we must get recourse at SAFARICOM! Am sure they’ll comply if enough subscribers insist, or we take our case to Senator Omtata! Safaricom provided a USSD code *100*100# which sets your number to be replacable only when you are present with your ID at your nearest safaricom customer care shop. I've activated it but not sure if it works as they claim. What's puzzling & scary is why a sim swap is possible while the same sim is active & in use. Until we're safe, its best to deactivate mobile banking access to our accounts. On Sat, 17 Jun 2023, 10:34 Dr. Mary Ngunyi via KICTANet, < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:

Another thing: Once you've done this "*100*100#" the first time, any subsequent attempts to redo it should tell you that "you already activated this security issue, on date YYYY-MM-DD" and so there is no need for a second time. I'm always curious as to how much regulation goes to Safaricom by the CBK on Mpesa matters. Is it time to hold them to the same compliance standards as we would banks? Should we hold them to account and require them to establish an internal Anti-Banking Fraud Unit to investigate security concerns by clients? Does outsourcing of core customer support services compromise the customer data making it vulnerable and easy to abuse? *Regards* *Magdaline Wanjiku Waithira* |*Mobile - **0705433474|* *|LinkedIn Magdaline Wanjiku Waithira <https://www.linkedin.com/in/magdaline-wanjiku-waithira-980229a9/> |* *If you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it — Margaret Fuller * On Sat, Jun 17, 2023 at 5:38 PM Mwaura Njoroge via KICTANet < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:
Safaricom provided a USSD code *100*100# which sets your number to be replacable only when you are present with your ID at your nearest safaricom customer care shop.
I've activated it but not sure if it works as they claim.
What's puzzling & scary is why a sim swap is possible while the same sim is active & in use.
Until we're safe, its best to deactivate mobile banking access to our accounts.

I called Safaricom ASAP and told them “These thugs had too much info on my transactions, they must be Safaricom insiders or outsiders with access to all my records”
Sending someone who has lost thousands to the police is COLD! Our service agreement is with Safaricom not police and we must get recourse at SAFARICOM! Am sure they’ll comply if enough subscribers insist, or we take our case to Senator Omtata!

Just how easy is it to do SIM Swap? Seems like the chaps at Mulot bado wanafanya ile kitu.
Story below from a recent complaint on Safcom's FB page today:
Safaricom PLC you people will loose customers because of this sim swap thing.
