CCK Should Provide Tools for Service Monitoring
I've given up on my ISP. I am currently receiving 1/16th of the advertised bandwidth according to various independent tests. Even for a shared connection this is outrageous. They insist that I should only use their tool to measure my provisioned bandwidth, a tool that measures speeds between my premises and theirs. A pointless exercise since I subscribed to Internet services not a local loop connection. Now if the CCK could provide consumers with an online tool to measure what they are actually receiving, as well as compelling ISPs to clearly state the performance limitations of their service, we would all make informed decisions on who to purchase Internet services from. Is this within the regulator's mandate? Muchiri. ******* Sent from my Android device
Hi Muchiri, I have the same problem with my ISP. Tests I ran yesterday showed I was getting 1% of the advertised bandwidth. I have also been told to use their tool/speetest site to check teh connection. I have also told them on numerous occasions that when they can host CNN, Yahoo, YouTube, Google, GMail, etc on their local servers is when I will be interested in local speeds between my premises and theirs. What CCK needs to do is set minimum standards for Quality of Service. Just because the connections we have are shared does not mean we should get terrible service. Hi Muchiri, As a veteran in the Industry I have a few pointers that would help. 1. It is a liberalized market one is free to choose an ISP that would give better service so by all means shop for better one. 2. It would be good for CCK to measure ISP performance independently so that minimum standards are kept, bandwidth delivered, quality of customer service. As CCK does this for the mobile operators it should do the same for ISPs in its quarterly reports and have some sort of penalty if the providers don't comply. Perhaps use TESPOK or KITOS help work with the providers and CCK for compliance. 3. I totally agree that bandwidth provided is not the last mile but the bandwidth to the Internet..period. One can use a site www.testmy.net that actually gives you comparison results for other ISPs in Kenya including your provider, would help you choose a better one.
