@Adam Is there a western country that has allowed its original carrier to collapse on its own? Infact has any of them allowed a foreign company to come do the honours for it? The notion that governments cannot run successful businesses is refuted by France Telecom Better known as Orange and DHL which are still wholly government owned by their respective companies. Is AT&T collapsing? The 30 billion shillings that France telecom has effectively been awarded is still ot translating to profits. Next they will want to sell prime real estate because they don't have money. This is not a business issue but manipulation for control. France telecom wants total control of Telecom Kenya possibly for nefarious reasons. I fail to see how they are not able to turn a profit with all the resources at their disposal. In an interesting twist CCK has issued a warning and threat of punitive action against Telkom Kenya/France Telecom in what it calls 'unprocedural' transfer of shares.
In light of this I think CCK is stepping up and doing the right thing. Lets go one step further:-
The Government should face up to the fact that this was a failed experiment and put in place mechanisms to return the 'crown jewel' back to the Kenyan People.

Those are valid points but the facts aren't all there. 1. At&t was never government owned although they did enjoy a monopoly until 1982 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_AT%26T) when the federal government broke it up. 2. DHL was not majority controlled by Deutsche Post (the national mail carrier of Germany) until 2002 (http://wap.dhl.com/info/history.html) by which point Deutsche Post had already been an independent corporation for 2 years (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutsche_Post) 3. Orange S.A. (formerly France Telecom) is minority owned by the French government (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange_S.A.#Shareholders) but the majority of shares have been public since 2004 - three years before the Telkom investment. -- Kili.io - OpenStack for Africa: kili.io Musings: twitter.com/varud <https://twitter.com/varud> About Adam: www.linkedin.com/in/adamcnelson On Thu, Aug 29, 2013 at 11:59 AM, Mark Mwangi <mwangy@gmail.com> wrote:

Sorry Adam but I beg to differ. 1) You cannot compare the US copper plant with the Kenyan copper plant 2) One of the most valuable components of a copper plant is the right of way (wayleave) 3) TKL also owns/controls 40% of the TEAMS fiber optic cable 4) TKL has management rights for the National fibre backbone - NOFBI 5) TKL owns real estate in every county, district and sub-location in the country (it's branches and exchanges) 6) TKL holds a "basket" of licenses, along with frequencies that would arouse any telco in the world Best regards, Brian On Thu, Aug 29, 2013 at 11:39 AM, Adam Nelson <adam@varud.com> wrote:

Wouldn't it be more easier to sweet talk GoK for tax and other incentives rather than arm twist it?

In an interesting twist CCK has issued a warning and threat of punitive action against Telkom Kenya/France Telecom in what it calls 'unprocedural' transfer of shares.

@Adam thanks for the correction. I need to do my homework better. It appears most of the companies are not wholly govt controlled. They are however still vibrant maybe due to Govt. influence such as the monopoly afforded to AT&T. As Brian says, the sheer infrastructure so strategically placed is a gold mine. No reason they shouldn't be the most profitable institution this side of the Congo Forest. And I do not believe it is inept management. I believe it is legitimate shareholder dilution.

Sorry Adam but I beg to differ.
1) You cannot compare the US copper plant with the Kenyan copper plant
True ... but if the US one is waning to the point where they're not laying anymore than that's a good signal that it's a dying technology
2) One of the most valuable components of a copper plant is the right of way (wayleave)
Agreed.
3) TKL also owns/controls 40% of the TEAMS fiber optic cable
That's worth some but that cable is not nearly as valuable as EASSy or SEACOM and the ownership is 17% according to this article which may be dated (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TEAMS_(cable_system)
4) TKL has management rights for the National fibre backbone - NOFBI
That seems more like a duty than a right. If they make too much money from it, CCK or GoK will reassign the right to another company. How long is that contract for?
5) TKL owns real estate in every county, district and sub-location in the country (it's branches and exchanges)
Agreed
6) TKL holds a "basket" of licenses, along with frequencies that would arouse any telco in the world
I presume those licenses can be reassigned by CCK but of course they're valuable if the spectrum is usable by the mobile operators ... but they're not really valuable since a fifth mobile operator license has been denied by GoK ...
Best regards,
Brian

Since when was a landline company a 'crown jewel'. It's 2013 and that company should just be left to fall apart on its own.

I presume the Kenyan rate is far below that but it seems like the focus should be on fiber and LTE and not worrying about dinosaurs like Kenya Telekom

Well noted Brian, though as Adam notes, fiber is the future. Orange is laying a good amount of Fiber now. We need Orange Leadership to offer (Shared) Business Internet @ 5K (5Mbs) to 10K (10Mbs) Caps if they must exist - 200GB for the 5K offer..... 500GB for the 10K offer. Of course they need prompt to respond, precise/accurate customer service. Blessings Murigi / Stanley Muraya *"Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city." Bottom line is the current TKL management (read France Telecom) blindly believe that they can compete with Safaricom as a mobile operator, thereby neglecting all other potential assets/revenue opportunities. Maybe take away everything else and leave them with the mobile license (there is a precedent for this in Tanzania). As for the total potential that TKL has - my list only scratched the surface.... Well noted Brian, though as Adam notes, fiber is the future. Orange is laying a good amount of Fiber now.
We need Orange Leadership to offer (Shared) Business Internet @ 5K (5Mbs) to 10K (10Mbs)
Caps if they must exist - 200GB for the 5K offer..... 500GB for the 10K offer.
Of course they need prompt to respond, precise/accurate customer service.

Safaricom is laying fiber too... bet in the near future, they will beat totally beat Orange by making this kind offer. Bottom line is the current TKL management (read France Telecom) blindly believe that they can compete with Safaricom as a mobile operator, thereby neglecting all other potential assets/revenue opportunities. Maybe take away everything else and leave them with the mobile license (there is a precedent for this in Tanzania).
As for the total potential that TKL has - my list only scratched the surface....

In light of this I think CCK is stepping up and doing the right thing. Lets go one step further:-
The Government should face up to the fact that this was a failed experiment and put in place mechanisms to return the 'crown jewel' back to the Kenyan People.

My sentiments exactly. High quality fiber is the foundation of the Internet economy in Kenya and 1K per Mb is fine by global standards - there just needs to be more availability: * This solution won't help everybody * This solution won't help the poor * This solution won't help the rural * This solution will empower the 1% of serious technology people in the main cities to create businesses and develop global-calibre skills ... and those businesses will be the bedrock that supports the three points above. BTW, JTL Faiba offers fiber for those prices and it's very high quality with no caps as far as I can tell. -- Kili.io - OpenStack for Africa: kili.io Musings: twitter.com/varud <https://twitter.com/varud> About Adam: www.linkedin.com/in/adamcnelson On Thu, Aug 29, 2013 at 1:00 PM, S.M. I feel it's time Orange ate the humble pie. This wars with government are just distracting the company and they now also look like the company is fighting with patriotism by extension.
Wouldn't it be more easier to sweet talk GoK for tax and other incentives rather than arm twist it?

In an interesting twist CCK has issued a warning and threat of punitive action against Telkom Kenya/France Telecom in what it calls 'unprocedural' transfer of shares.
In light of this I think CCK is stepping up and doing the right thing. Lets go one step further:-
The Government should face up to the fact that this was a failed experiment and put in place mechanisms to return the 'crown jewel' back to the Kenyan People.

Yes, they have. I know several pple using the 5K for 5Mbps. On 29 August 2013 10:17, S.M. Muraya <murigi.muraya@gmail.com> wrote:
JTL Faiba does not have the 5K offer -- that is where the competition will beat them + it is a domestic service -- not offered to commercial buildings/premises - from what a sales/service rep told me early this year.

My sentiments exactly. High quality fiber is the foundation of the Internet economy in Kenya and 1K per Mb is fine by global standards - there just needs to be more availability:
* This solution won't help everybody * This solution won't help the poor * This solution won't help the rural * This solution will empower the 1% of serious technology people in the main cities to create businesses and develop global-calibre skills ... and those businesses will be the bedrock that supports the three points above.
BTW, JTL Faiba offers fiber for those prices and it's very high quality with no caps as far as I can tell.

Sorry Adam but I beg to differ.
1) You cannot compare the US copper plant with the Kenyan copper plant 2) One of the most valuable components of a copper plant is the right of way (wayleave) 3) TKL also owns/controls 40% of the TEAMS fiber optic cable 4) TKL has management rights for the National fibre backbone - NOFBI 5) TKL owns real estate in every county, district and sub-location in the country (it's branches and exchanges) 6) TKL holds a "basket" of licenses, along with frequencies that would arouse any telco in the world

Since when was a landline company a 'crown jewel'. It's 2013 and that company should just be left to fall apart on its own.
In the US, only 1 in 4 households will have a traditional landline by the end of the year:

I presume the Kenyan rate is far below that but it seems like the focus should be on fiber and LTE and not worrying about dinosaurs like Kenya Telekom
