Gentlemen,
Just to clarify the MPESA platform is the Vodafone money transfer platform you may have seen historically. There are many benefits from having the system centrally hosted but we do continue to review the pros and cons to ensure that the platform remains on the cutting edge of technology and also benefits from economies of scale through sharing resources with the other countries in which MPESA has been rolled out to.

From a technical stand-point the statement above can be easily interpreted as a technically flawed design IMHO. It almost states that the M-PESA services are "entirely" dependent on connectivity to Germany.
I doubt if this is the case and you may want to clarify. If it is the case - i have to say its quite a challenge on your hands to provide an efficient service for a local service that depends on international connectivity.

I was going to rant about this too, but I decided not to, because something hit my mind: Since I have a Safaricom WiMax link which I use only for Int'l VoIP, them having to rely on DB servers in Germany is a good thing for me (perhaps) - that they will ensure my Int'l link never goes down:-)))
The negative side to what Betty said is simply something about Kenya's IT infrastructure. That Safaricom does NOT have faith in having their servers hosted locally, since they don't trust having their servers in Kenya. Now, that is another minus for Safaricom!

Listers, I empathise with so many people whose are having a go at Safaricom and Bob Collymore. I think customer service at Safaricom is deteriorating rapidly. For instance, I am a postpaid customer, and noticed more than weeks ago that there are some (billed) items on my bill that I did not, and do not still, understand. I called the customer service people who promised to get back to me the next day. I am still waiting. I have the texts they sent me to indicate they had recorded my query if anybody from the company cares. They are in the process of without doubt losing my custom. My feeling is that I am not alone. Not alone George I traveled out of the country I found that I was automatically on roaming tarriff. When I came back Safaricom kept charging me at the roaming rate. When I realized and reported which is over a year now nothing has been done to refund. This morning I tried to use the sambaza facility which is on the menu. Twice it gave me the following message "The format is incorrect. Please check and try again". Considering that this is a menu driven facility where you only input:- 1)The amount to transfer 2)The Cell Phone number to transfer to 3) Pin number I wonder what else I needed to check to have it go thru? A few weeks ago I posed the question if Safaricom was going thru problems after upgrade which was not answered properly. What are the integrity issues coming up after the upgrade which can be shared with the public? Is the SLA level still the same on the Customer Service? Listers, Yet again my post has been hijacked and the message I was trying to get across has been watered down to the level of irrelevance. It is my strong believe that this is done intentionally by certain forces, more like how the two principles and their ilk have a way to divert an entire nation from an issue of national importance to nonsensical side shows like the launch of a drought hot line. If you need to raise an issue about service by a provider please start your own post, it does not cost you anything, as it allows multiple discussions to go on unabated. To follow up on my original well intended none rant post it has come to my knowledge through well informed sources at Safaricom whose names I refuse to divulge that Bob Collymore has really arrived just that he opted to cleanup the house before inviting in the public. I do not want to be preposterous by assuming that my post had anything to do with his actions, he was already in motion just that he had not left the station. Some of the issues that indicate the arrival of Bob are; 1. Managers will be required to spend at least one day a month at a customer service center so as to get a better appreciation of the organisations activities. I hope this will enable them to realise that we have been issued with receipts that are denominated in US Dollars 2. No more managers only meals and coffees they are expected to use the cafeteria like all the rest, Njuguna's will definitely be seeing some increased pre-mututho activity. 3. The private lifts and VIP keys are to be or where withdrawn from the Managers so that they can rub shoulders with the commoners and hopefully appreciate that they make money at less than a dollar per transaction. 4. There has been a major reshuffling of personnel and realignment of the operations, there is also a new system being installed to harmonise the billing and management of all data services which should mean that soon I will receive a single bill for all my postpaid services. 5. I also suspect that the customer service for both Safaricom and Safaricom Business are being unified which should result in me saving the cost of calling the none toll free WiMax support line. 6. Wishful thinking, Bob Collymore is planning to delete his twitter account. Now if only those who opted to hijack my post had not Safaricom would most likely have been able to provide us with a structured response but because the gist of the post got buried in unrelated responses I was left high and dry. I repeat yet again that the reason we all rant and rave about Safaricom is because they are big and beating them makes a loud noise and also that when we do make a noise they respond positively. I can now buy data bundles for my remotely placed devices saving me the headache of climbing up masts. On the issue of what should be posted I would like to remind us all that the greatest achievement are based on mob activity such as Saba Saba, Egypt, Tunisia and the Boston Tea Party. People must first be allowed to vent so as to exhaust their physical energy after which they can settle down and use their brains which is the state you need us to be in to discuss policy so lets not cut the branch we are sitting on Regards "Sijalipwa, bado" - A gun for hire I am not.
