My attention was rather drawn to a part of the story which has interesting implications on the National Broadband Strategy which was launched a few years ago with much fanfare during Hon. Hi Ali, I read in the news some times back that this was a new business line of Kenya Power to take advantage of the grid to provide a fibre backbone. It appears the extra space on the link will be sold to TELCO's and Bandwidth Service Providers. AFAIK, Kenya Power already has fibre backbone, used for their own network for management and control - and extra capacity (dark fibres) are already leased to other service providers. I think this project is much more than this - ie. FTTH. I certainly hope so. Whether the end-user is charged directly by Kenya Power (who would then become an ISP!) or some third party, sijui. From a product perspective, this project appears to be motivated by a vertical integration move by Kenya Power. Backward to be able to better utilise the power grid infrastructure vide riding the fibre on the existing power grid, Forward to be able to bundle solutions (power & data) to the already existing customers. Due to the economies of scale and already existing infrastructure (distribution, subscription, customer service) this is a welcome move which if well managed will lead to reduced product costs(both power & data), higher penetration and efficiencies through reduced redundancies and customer service. For this benefits to be achieved, the process needs to be creatively implemented devoid of regulatory and political interference.

It looks like the taxpayer is building a parallel National Grid Fibre as is on the MoU "*memorandum of understanding between the Chinese company ZTE and the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum which the parties have signed to finance and build a national grid fibre*" It's only important the several government agencies inform the public how this new fibre is complementing NOFBI, how NOFBI has run out of capacity, shortcomings of NOFBI, etc. Are the different government agencies working together, or are they in competition? The more cables we have, the more capacity we have, but the pain is, the end user will still have to pay the capital expense in deploying them. It appears the extra space on the link will be sold to TELCO's and Bandwidth Service Providers. It's only important the several government agencies inform the public how this new fibre is complementing NOFBI, how NOFBI has run out of capacity, shortcomings of NOFBI, etc. Are the different government agencies working together, or are they in competition?
The more cables we have, the more capacity we have, but the pain is, the end user will still have to pay the capital expense in deploying them.

Hi Ali,
I read in the news some times back that this was a new business line of Kenya Power to take advantage of the grid to provide a fibre backbone. It appears the extra space on the link will be sold to TELCO's and Bandwidth Service Providers. Looking at the way the undersea cables were deployed, my opinion is the more the merrier, it will create competition whose end result will be affordability due to price differentiation.

Technically, the 'last mile' does pose some challenges - Broadband over Power Line (BPL) has a lot of issues [1], but AT&T claim to have a new system [2] in development which may provide a solution.
