Re: [kictanet] Why Kenya’s telcos should push back on any shutdown orders
Grace Thanks for sharing. This is an important conversation to have and clearly the Government hasn't committed explicitly on whether they have a Shutdown Plan in place. What is important at this time is to get a FIRM commitment from the Telcos that they have a PLAN in place if the Government decides to go ahead with the Shutdown anyway. Listers, This blog post explores the relationship between telcos, their customers/public and the government. It states: "Telecommunications companies empower people to exercise freedom of expression, but they can also enable politically motivated attempts to control the flow of information online. Kenya is a champion of the digital economy and has a strong reputation for putting technology to work for people’s rights and interests. If the government orders a shutdown during the election anyway, will Kenyan telcos stand firm against those demands?"

Hi Ali, Most Telco's unfortunately don't want to get into a fight that would put their licences in Jeopardy, their interests are commercial as opposed to social. Until we are able to accord CA the independence it deserves, this might be a mirage, we can only mitigate any risks.
