Hi Ali,

Most Telco's unfortunately don't want to get into a fight that would put their licences in Jeopardy, their interests are commercial as opposed to social. Until we are able to accord CA the independence it deserves, this might be a mirage, we can only mitigate any risks.

Best Regards

Thanks for sharing. This is an important conversation to have and clearly the Government hasn't committed explicitly on whether they have a Shutdown Plan in place.

What is important at this time is to get a FIRM commitment from the Telcos that they have a PLAN in place if the Government decides to go ahead with the Shutdown anyway.

Listers,
This blog post explores the relationship between telcos, their customers/public and the government. It states:
"Telecommunications companies empower people to exercise freedom of expression, but they can also enable politically motivated attempts to control the flow of information online. Kenya is a champion of the digital economy and has a strong reputation for putting technology to work for people’s rights and interests. If the government orders a shutdown during the election anyway, will Kenyan telcos stand firm against those demands?"
