Lemek Primary Boarding School, Is this the picture of our rural schools?

Listers Over the weekend I was in Narok County on some business. On our way back we gave a lift to a Mr. Michael Lemerian, the Deputy Head Teacher of Lemek Boarding. What he had to tell us was a sorry tale mixed with humor. What it was ultimately is a major indictment of the Education System in the country. First, a bit of background. Lemek village, Narok County is 200kms from Nairobi with a population of about 250. The school which is a mixed boarding and day school accommodates about 800 students. From our conversation with Michael, he told us a few things:- 1. None of the students and majority of the teachers (95%) have ever operated a computer 2. Asked about the Tablet/Computer/Laptop program - Michael told us that the first time they heard about the tablet they wondered whether the government was about to send them tablets (of the medicine kind). Seriously. 3. None of the teachers and the school have an email address. 4. Michael had a vague idea of what google is and wondered whether Facebook had something to do with the face.. 5. There is only one computer for typing exams 6. No inspectors from the ministry have visited the school for a whole year. The only time they visited was when teachers were on strike. 7. This year the government allocated 108k for books. 8. 1 bed for two kids (yes, kids share a bed) 9. According to Michael, the school has sent only one student through to university in the last 4 years. Is this the typical Rural Kenya School? How can we help the Education Ministry improve this lot? Otherwise we are facing a situation where the Global Competitiveness of the country is rapidly deteriorating. Any senior person from the Education Ministry on the list? Bobby, Eng. Kariuki, I happen to know the team of bright chaps who facilitated the production of the Natinal Broadband Strategy - and I can assure it was not done in some isolated nad exclusive dark room :-) They tell me that in setting targets, on must be appreciate where we are today in order to project where you expect to b in nxt 5yrs. 5MB per USER by 2017 may look poor compared to the US but did you know that some of our newer Universities can only afford 10MB for their 3000+ students? You must also differentiate between capacity (of technology/bandwidth) vis a viz actual bandwidth projected to be USED. Right now in Kenya, our Operators have the technologies and capacities to deliver even 10MB per USER for each of the 16m Internet users in Kenya. But do they? The answer is big NO. The average Kenyan uses cannot afford a fiber or wireless link of 10MB per month. In the broadband strategy we need to work on the dynamics that would make this average Kenyan afford and USE at least 5MBs per month. There main objective being to achieve economic and security paralysis in the country. I realized the other day that the Kenya National Disaster Operations Center (known to us as @NDOCKenya on Twitter) doesn't have even a simple website up. If they didn't have a Twitter handle, no one would even know how to reach them or get any updates from them at all. On their Twitter profile they list the following: The Kenya National Disaster Operation Centre manages and coordinates disaster response at a national level. Email info(a)ndockenya.org Call +254-020-2212386 Nairobi, Kenya · nationaldisaster.go.ke Now, you'll note three things: The website doesn't work. There is absolutely nothing, it's just a dead page. The email address goes to NDOCKenya.org - but if you go there, you'll find it's just being hosted at GoDaddy with nothing to show. This raises a bunch of questions, but perhaps the foremost being: Why do they use this as their email address when they own a go.ke domain? A way to reach the NATIONAL Disaster Ops Centre is a pretty important thing to have. It's unforgivable that they can't even put up a one-page information website, much less have a site that allows people to know the official places to go, things to do/not do, during a national emergency. Interesting findings on HELB Link: http://www.careerpointkenya.com/2013/09/26/unbelievable-hackers-making-mill… Seems like there is a new way to make money in town…..if you can hack into the dysfunctional Higher Educations Loans Board (Helb) website, you are good to go! *How do they do it?* A new investigation by *The People* reveals that the operators hack the systems, retrieve blank application forms and sell them to graduate students at Sh430 inclusive of printing charges. Keeping in mind that we have 40, 000 of the 50,000 students who are eligible for Helb loans, the hackers who operate the cyber cafes around Nairobi are anticipating of make around Sh17.2 million! *And this is how it is done,* the student fill the downloaded forms which they later return to the hackers for filling into the HELB data bank and just like that you are eligible for a HELB loan! *Two questions arise in all of this confusion,* 1.Are the officials involved in all of this? 2.And how are the attendants able to access and perform the operations? And since we all know how the process of getting hard copies from the Helb offices can be tedious that will be the main reason why students will be going to the hackers for an ‘easy way out’ They will follow this newly introduced method in town which is already booming with a chain of the business fast developing in residential areas around Kenyatta University main campus on Thika Road. “I am just forced to take the next option which is to risk to see what future holds a month after admission,” says a Kenyatta University student who identified himself as Peter. “It is risky we understand, but we have no choice.
