ISOC Kenya Chapter Creation efforts

Dear Colleagues, There has been growing interest on various lists to have a local ISOC Chapter up and running, we have had many Kenyans participate in ISOC programs as fellows, unfortunately we haven't had a forum where we can share the knowledge and experiences gained through the fellowship opportunities. The purpose of this email is to invite all interested parties to join a mailing list that has been created to bring together interested stakeholders so that we can deliberate on how to establish an open and inclusive ISOC chapter that will be based on a multistakeholder model. Fw: Fibre Optic Cable cuts

Hi Listers, Today I was in the Westlands area and came across Telkom/Orange staff laying fibre optic cable through what was professionally done ducting. At a depth of over 7 feet this cable is definitely more secure than the one I saw in Kilimani area lying literally in the surface. The interesting thing is that all this was done when Telkom/KPTC had only 350,000 landlines across the country. We seriously need to do something about our work ethic and professionalism if we are going to surface to 2020 let alone 2030. Local Content - Beyond lip service

Hi Listers, I have been following the activities of a local developer who has made great strides in creating a platform for hosting local content through his web site www.eziki.tv. Unfortunately due to the high cost of local hosting he has been forced, like many other brilliant young men and women, to host overseas where the cost are low but then they suffer the hit from bandwidth limitations. This young man has taken initiative and put down his resources to prove a concept and I believe he deserves direct local investment from funds such as Tandaa, Kazi Kwa Vijana and many others instead of us asking dreamers to present proposals and business plans for cloud based products. I would like to propose we pick up this has a project and bring the site back home and empower the team to move to greater heights before some VC from the US grabs him then we start lamenting. Introduction of Power rationing for industrial zones : A result of failure of national planning policies?

This game is repeated each time we are in drought years, with the quick "import" mentality rush to get in fdi partners or the rest to invest buy/lease diesel guzzling generators to compliment the shortfalls is becoming too routine. More results of shortcuts implemented over years of failed national planning policies and excuses that is resulting in many direct/indirect losses in the economy. This time around there are multiple excuses, from high demands during peak hours to breakdowns/maintainence of generators to delays in security guarantees for investors. High demands during peak hours is an incremental event and did not just appear overnight, water levels did not drop overnight and nor did investors just apply to supply power. We have known for years our climate is changing patterns ( no thanks to the major polluters i.e the developed nations who contribute most towards the climate behaviour ), rainfall patterns in our region has been out of sync for at least the past 10 years so. We have all the data, the remote sensing abilities and infrastructure to maintain an intelligent national network of early warning systems to counter gaps yet we are only capable of the ultimate solution = power rationing. Macharia, Thank you for taking time out to go through the article. Next time I will confine myself to 700 words. It would be nice if MOA takes my offer of a public debate to trash out some of the issues. It will be nice for our future Media. I think we have fundermental issues that affect a free and fair Media in our country. We must be sensitive not only to legal requirement on objectivity but diversity of opinion. Most articles distorted the facts. For example, it was stated the company flouted legal requirement on shares when indeed the policy allows up to three years on this. The Ugandan and Rwanda story did not help although NMG made some apologies in tiny print somewhere far from where it was reported. Once more I thank you for your concern. Will Digital TV overtake the internet and mobile industry?

While many may disagree that DVBT/2 standards will be the next big market, possibly creating the next Kenyan HBOs and the outcome if implemented correctly will change the way we receive information or services. The hype of internet and mobile looks like a page in some history books and outdated. One of the main reasons for the sucess is the ability to deliver more channels over significantly lowered costs while at the same time using an entertainment platform ( as the TV ) for reaching millions. The segmentation of various licenses adds a further growth pattern to the market. In the old days of TV services, and kenya did not implement this, there were services known as TeleText services which provided much basic informational services to millions of people. In Kenya, I believe the DTT platform is going to change plenty much if the channel rates are within reach. I'd like to list some basic impacts : 1) Local artists groups will have the capacity to own a channel and create another "channel O" type of TV presence. 2) Shopping TV channel 3) Informational Services, including stock exchange data 4) Farmers Channel, realtime updates on various commodities 5) When and if the return path is implemented in the STB house box unit, inter-active services will become available. For example, in the UK, some online polling for various programs is done from the remote control of the STB receiver. 6) For prospective paytv content providers, Kenya is now wired up enough to take those channels that cannot be located on satellites and pushed over fiber connections to the final broadcasting infrastructure.
