This role is an eleven-month contract opportunity, and will be based in Johannesburg. We are looking for a public policy expert who can combine a passion for technology’s potential to create opportunity and to make Africa more open and connected, with deep knowledge of the political and regulatory dynamics in South Africa. The South Africa Public Policy and Communications Manager will support the Head of Public Policy, Africa, and will become part of a team that is dealing with some of the most interesting public policy challenges of our times including privacy, safety and security, freedom of expression online, access policy, the impact of the Internet on economic growth, and the impact of social media upon democratic engagement. Responsibilities * Assist in the development of and and lead on the execution of South Africa policy engagement strategy * Monitor legislation and regulatory matters affecting Facebook and advise company with respect to policy challenges * Represent Facebook in meetings with government officials, elected members, civil society and other policy influencers * Develop public policy positions in partnership with other team members at Facebook * Identify key local partners and build coalitions with to advance policy goals of Facebook * Work with Africa/EMEA/Global policy programs leads to create/execute localized and innovative programs for outreach to policy makers and influencers * Communicate Facebook’s positions in public presentations * Advise Facebook teams on the full range of locally relevant public policy matters to guide development of products, services and policies Requirements * A degree and an advanced degree in a related field * Proven experience working on relevant policy issues * Proven expertise in media policy and/or telecommunication policy * Fluent English language essential - additional local language expertise highly desirable * A familiarity with working with politicians and government officials including those at the senior levels * Existing strong and broad networks amongst policy influencers (including ICASA, DTPS, Ministry of Communications, FPB and civil society) * Passion for Facebook and its connectivity mission is essential * Demonstrated ability to work in cross-functional and cross-cultural teams from a wide range of disciplines * Excellent communication skills for both small meetings and large events * Excellent judgment, superior written/verbal communication and persuasive skills (writing samples required), creativity, perspective, the ability to work with minimal supervision in a dynamic environment * Manage responses to government and parliamentary inquiries * Prepare briefing materials and manage executive spokespeople * An ability to translate between the specialist languages of technology and politics * Detailed knowledge of South African regulatory and legislative processes, with SADC experience as a plus * Ability to engage and influence others within the company on complex communication issues * Experience in the Internet technology industry a plus * Passion for Facebook and its mission is essential [Description: Description: Description: cid:image001.png@01C8F888.8FCCE630] Ebele Okobi | Head of Public Policy, Africa m. +44 (0) 771 156 1315 2 Stephen St | London | W1T 1AN ebeleokobi@fb.com
