To spice up the debate and get us going i found the following information from the White African ( http://whiteafrican.com/2011/02/18/kenyas-mobile-internet-by-the-numbers-q4-...) which are statistics drawn from the CCK Sector Statistics Report ( http://www.cck.go.ke/resc/statcs.html) for quarter 4 2010 Highlights of Q4 2010: - There are 22 million mobile subscribers in Kenya - 9.5% mobile subscriptions growth, which is increasing over the previous quarters - 6.63 billion minutes of local calls were made on the mobile networks - 740 million text messages were sent - Prepaid accounts for 99% of the total mobile subscriptions - The number of internet *users* was estimated at 8.69 million - The number of internet/data *subscriptions* is 3.2 million - Broadband subscriptions increased from 18,626 subscribers in the previous quarter to 84,726 On Fri, Jul 1, 2011 at 1:07 PM, Barrack Otieno <otieno.barrack@gmail.com>wrote:

@Barrack, Its quite a short notice but since u have an interesting menu of topics, am tempted to shoot first and off-the-head. Qtn1: Role of mobile networks in provision of internet? promotion?+local content? spectrum? Answer1: enormous impact observed and documented by the regulator @ www.cck.go.ke, over 5million? Kenyan using mobile modems to connect... Answer2: we need promotion and encouragement to bring internet to rural areas. Kenya is NOT Nairobi and Nairobi is not Kenya (ref: my recent and frustrating experience of trying to connect from Embu County, the HQ of Eastern province). The policy and indeed the legislation provides for Universal Service Fund (USF) to deal with this - but all the "big" shots went mute when i asked this question - what is (not) happening with the USF? (Dr. Ndemo, Eng Okundi et. al.- r u still on this list?) . Answer3: local content? I think we have done well with mobile content (e.g. downloads of music tracks, ringtones, etc). but we are doing badly on websites (was 17,000 dot.ke domains announced by Sammy B, Chair of KENIC). Looks good until u realize Egypt, SA deal with millions of domains...with a higher % ratio of domain names of population sizes. Answer4: on spectrum, I have to put a disclaimer that am not an expert here. Thanks for the response Walu, you have brought in interesting dimensions, going by the KeNIC agm i think you might be able to purchase a domain through your mobile phone soon, a target of 50,000 domains has been set, i am waiting with bated breath to see how many will be acquired through the mobile platform, have a great weekend. Thank you very Much Barrack for yet again moderating these sessions despite your other many responsibilities. Aki asked this question : - The first question that does come up is electronic registration of .KE domains from a user view. Is this a system that has been implemented into the core of KENIC so that any domain registrars can use the facility or has the process been left to private companies to create and offer, thus creating an un-competitive environment. I believe such a core system should provide universal access to any kenyan domain registrars and hope there is something in the pipeline and funds too, if not already in place. Hope this is something we hear more about. Attempted Answer: The registrars are now encouraged and should automate the domain registration process and payment processing, so that end users can register domains without human intervention. Registration of all .KE domains will be done by registrars who are accredited by the KENIC registry who manages the root server. This is the trend with the KENIC equivalent of .COM, .NET, .NAME being VERISIGN. To register domains on the root servers administered by VERISIGN, you must be a registrar accredited by ICANN. I would be very interest to learn what percentage of mobile bandwidth is used with Facebook Zero in Kenya. Also, as I understand it on some carriers it is "free" but you have to pay for pictures.
