Re: [kictanet] Blow as acting Konza techno city boss
Bernard, Great innovators started with wild ideas and yours is a wild as they get but yet loaded with substance. Would you mind discussing it further offline and I put you in the direction of the person dealing with anchor investments in Konza. It is a brilliant idea. There are 3 main fibre cables near Konza and there is plan to pull one of this in...a last mile issue in a sense. I know the Board of Konza are keen on some sort of hub like the one you are talking about, where you can put some people together to work on something. Seriously one should read the stories of Silicon Valley (and not we are not replicating this) but there is so much learning that shows your idea is not far-fetched. We need to explore it. The only challenge is the accomodation but Governor Mutua did promise that he would ensure he is building 'dormitories' for Konza so while the housing is being sorted out this is great start. Imagine you put these people there, then put a research lab near it, a university nearby.....what will happen. you are on to something. A top official who has been at the helm of the Konza Techno City project has opted out amid claims of resource constraints and slow progress.
Dr Catherine Adeya-Weya, who has been the acting chief executive officer of the Konza Technopolis Development Authority for two years, said she had decided to quit and let someone else come in and lead the project.
It was, however, clear from her statements that bureaucratic tendering, resource constraints and the slow pace of takeoff had largely influenced her decision.
"I just felt someone else needs to take over this project after acting for almost two years. I may have considered staying if confirmed, but I may not have wanted it. For a project of this magnitude, we require the right calibre of staff, and a proper and sufficient recurrent budget.
''What I was being paid as chief executive was less than what I used to earn in my former role in the private sector and so it is hard to attract the high calibre staff with that remuneration," Dr Adeya-Weya said at a joint press conference in Nairobi with board chairman, Mr John Ngumi, on Tuesday.
*PERFORMED WELL*
Mr Ngumi said Dr Adeya-We ya had performed well despite being in an acting capacity for the entire period.
He, however, added that the authority was prepared to continue with the little available resources since insufficient funding was a normal challenge in all government projects.
The chief executive's term was to end in February, with an option to apply when the position was announced in November last year.
She, however, chose not to, sparking speculations around her withdrawal from the team she has led for months.
Mr Ngumi said: "In my view, Catherine has had one of the toughest jobs. Anybody who has worked in the private sector knows how hard it is to start a startup. It is harder in the public sector where you have all manner of stakeholders, and you got to deal with constraints and criticism.
"She is an example of what we should have in public service and we, as the board, would have loved her to apply. I have implored her to remain involved in Konza at advisory role to the project." ______________________ Mwendwa Kivuva, Nairobi, Kenya

People, One just needs to estimate the traffic in the morning from 5:45am near Mlolongo towards Nairobi to realise that Konza is not too far after all. Yes, for some of us, a good internet connection in a hall at Konza will suffice. Indeed, if a small fraction of people believe, Konza is not too far from reality. Dormitories are also welcome but a university campus is the highest priority there. And as with other GoK initiatives, Konza City may not be a fit for everyone - the same way one did not have to hate on Thika road construction merely because they had built a home in Ongata Rongai. Good Day! On Jan 28, 2015 10:45 PM, "Catherine Adeya via kictanet" < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:

@Nyaki,
How can you leave before giving me a plot at Konza? I am going to mobilize politicians to ensure your replacement comes from our village :-)
Nway, you were there from the beginning and your contribution will be always be remembered. And on that note, someone needs to write the memoirs on ICT evolution in Kenya - the key projects, players, their roles & challenges. Particularly for the period before KANU left (1998-2002), NARC period (2002-2007), Coalition period (2008-2013) through now.
It doesn't hurt for the future generation to learn from what is now becoming ICT history right before our eyes.
walu.

Yes Mwendwa,
I am a founding member of Kictanet and will always be here though sometimes I lurk in the background. To set the record straight. I did not quite, my Contract in government has come to an end. I have been Acting for two years and truth be told, I did not want to be handed the position on a silver platter. They advertised, I did not apply. The rest is history so let me sign off with:
How do geese know when to fly to the sun? Who tells them the seasons? How do we, humans know when it is time to move on? As with the migrant birds, so surely with us, there is a voice within if only we would listen to it, that tells us certainly when to go forth into the unknown. ? Elisabeth Kubler-Ross
Thank you,
Catherine

Listers, we should note that Catherine Adeya was one of the few active CEOs on KICTANET.
http://www.nation.co.ke/business/Blow-as-acting-Konza-techno-city-boss-quits...

Bernard, Putting some figures into perspective. Rent and such costs are only about 2-10% of any IT'S company costs. Its almost insignificant as compared to say Engineering personnel costs. So I doubt rent would be an incentive at all. Taxes (VAT, PAYE, Corporate Tax) alone could be 30-50% if this could be struck off, we could start talking. @Nyaki,
How can you leave before giving me a plot at Konza? I am going to mobilize politicians to ensure your replacement comes from our village :-)
Nway, you were there from the beginning and your contribution will be always be remembered. And on that note, someone needs to write the memoirs on ICT evolution in Kenya - the key projects, players, their roles & challenges. Particularly for the period before KANU left (1998-2002), NARC period (2002-2007), Coalition period (2008-2013) through now.
It doesn't hurt for the future generation to learn from what is now becoming ICT history right before our eyes.

Agreed although I am looking more at how Konza can be used to nurture individual (but large number) talent. There is a lot of Software Gurus in Kenya who lack very basic resources to sit and write applications that would compete in the word’s software markets. Rent and such costs are only about 2-10% of any IT'S company costs. Its almost insignificant as compared to say Engineering personnel costs. So I doubt rent would be an incentive at all. Bernard,
Putting some figures into perspective.

Bernard,
Great innovators started with wild ideas and yours is a wild as they get but yet loaded with substance.

Sometimes I wonder...to kickstart Konza...why not take 100 software developers/it specialists and give them "space" to work from and have 1 big internet pipe servicing the area.....for free for first 1yr...then for a fee from year 2....ok maybe my idea is unreasonable but we aren?t dealing with reasonable circumstances in this country/continent.
Maybe young technology entusiasts would work anywhere if they had internet and not have to pay rent at their initial start. Plus from year two, you would convert those people to "partners" of the Konza City.
Let me get back to punching code.....
