Re: [kictanet] kictanet Digest, Vol 57, Issue 87

Based on the current speeds that we are experiencing it just shows we desperately need redundacy and probably proper security to prevent reoccurence, perhaps impose restoration fees to the ship owners. And realy i think on hindsight we ought to also appreciate the fast speeds that we are now accustomed to due to the submarrine cables :-) On Feb 27, 2012 3:25 PM, <kictanet-request@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:

Hi all,
I thought Teams and EASSY are laid out in a ring topology, my mistake.
?If this the same ship to cut the cable last time?
Regards
PS. ?Due to a ship dropping its anchor on the marine cable Konza City
will be offline for the next 7 days, we advice all organisations who are dependent on this connection to give their staff time off.

Apparently a ship (we have details) illegally anchored on the channel through which the cables pass and cut both.? The ports authority have the undersea route but we do not know how they made such a mistake.? Teams will be up in 7 days.
Lion landed in a different location to mitigate against such problems.? I do not know if Seacom is operational.
Ndemo.

The solution lies in protecting the cables from any interference whatsoever at the habour, probably by covering it with an unbrokable, undamagable metalic steel sheath at that point. There is no point blaming ship captains who are not familiar with our core infrastructure and our poor termination standards On 27/02/2012, Gideon <gideonrop@gmail.com> wrote:

I though core communication infrastructure is usually regarded as a matter of national security, just as our power stations (are they regarded as national security?)
