Hi, As many of you are aware yesterday KICTANET held a forum at Strathmore to come up with a position paper on the Class 1 Laptop project that will be rolling out in January 2014. We had a number of very enlightening position papers but most important was a presentation by the Ministry of Education on the project. Your core team will be compiling the final report which will be presented on behalf of KICTANET to the relevant government and parliamentary groups on the 19th of July 2013. Regards Robert Yawe KAY System Technologies Ltd Phoenix House, 6th Floor P O Box 55806 Nairobi, 00200 Kenya Tel: +254722511225, +254202010696

Daktari, The presentations will be shared with the brief report as soon as it is ready. The Ministry representative indicated that there is plenty of room for the ICT sector to engage with it to make the project a success. Over 80 stakeholders participated and the discussions were insightfull as Yawe says. Many thanks to iLab Africa (Strathmore University), the Ministry of Education represented by Mr. Sang, UNESCO, represented by Jaco Du Toit, Africa Nazarene University represented by Mercy Kawira, LPI East Africa represented by Evans Ikua, and all the other stakeholders who found time to come and engage. Thanks for the emails and well done to Kictanet for this. If the presentation from Ministry of Education is the core project presentation on the proposed execution, I agree that it would be great to share this before compiling the final report from the meeting. This will allow those who were unable to participate to provide input. Regards and allow me to duly reintroduce my new address. Got to hear the last 10-15 minutes of the MoE presentation in the afternoon. Clearly this project is going to impact Kenyan society even if the laptop part fails by whatever key performance indicators are set by various parties. There are serious investigations/plans to get schools currently too far off the electricity grid with solar power. Mr. Sang gave some real costs of a solar power installation at a school in Garissa. They are even asking where charging cabinets can be located, if not at schools. They need our ideas/solutions :) On Fri, Jul 5, 2013 at 8:27 AM, robert yawe <robertyawe@yahoo.co.uk> wrote:

I recently encountered a nice and rugged solar system at a school in Karamoja, Uganda. MoE may explore the kit. UNICEF was reported to have facilitated; on a deliver-install-maintain type of tender. I agree with @Muraya that MoE need our ideas/ solutions. Things that look viable on Powerpoint usually do not withstand the devil in execution. K. M On Fri, Jul 5, 2013 at 9:52 AM, S.M.
