Re: [kictanet] [ke-internetusers] Kenya's Mobile Money Innovation & Dr Mukhisa Kituyi's Article in Today's Nation
Daktari, Kindly reveal the name of the unsung hero (the University student) who never received due recognition. I have heard the stories but I have no name or a face to the name of the student behind MPESA. Our media should be able to give due publicity to such a student. Daktari,
I have to record my disappointment .... As usual with others who have commented on this subject before, we credit (in my view) all the wrong people, but leave out the true unsung hero: the young university student who 'invented' mpesa - the inventor/innovator! Not even his name is mentioned, or known! In the history of technological innovation in Kenya, the 'Governor of the Central Bank' (notably Micah Cheserem and the present) will have a special place! On the mPesa issue, among those mentioned the only one I would fret - given the power - would the CBK Governor, who was bold enough to let this 'experiment' take root.
Just in case one missed the story, read on ....: http://www.nation.co.ke/oped/Opinion/Kenyas+mobile+money+innovation+draws+wo... .

Samuel, Since I have been on air for the past 20 hours, I have not read the Nation Article. However, a number of young Kenyans came to my office saying they were the ones who came up with the mpesa idea. I assisted them to secure an appointment with then CEO and told them that in the event nothing happens, the best arbiter is court. They never came back to me and up to date, I have not seen them. The reason why I take the current position as true. When I first approached the them acting Govenor, the response was a straight no. After a series of meetings involving Treasury and CBK we obtained some approval. There were some progressive thinker in CBK such as Mwaura who made it easier. We must also credit Michael and his team for their persistence. I will look for the article and possibly make further comments. Ndemo. Its an extremely debatable issue, recognising anyone would encourage allot of claims to be made, failure to recognise means fear and loss of trust and this will discourage innovations. The most inquires we have received at the Nailab for the last 2 weeks since we launched is " How do I make sure my idea is not stolen?" - we do have an IP lawyer to help the incubatees overcome this fear at the moment. KIPI can help by simplify the process of application, the cost is affordable but the process is intimidating for young people. On Mon, May 23, 2011 at 12:53 AM, <bitange@jambo.co.ke> wrote:
