NIGERIA HAS DONE IT in 2 YEARS!

Listers, Nigerian Agriculture Minister, Dr Akinwumi Adesina (former VP of AGRA), has been named Forbes African Person of the Year for his reforms to the country's farming sector. He has made use of ICTs to transform how inputs are procured, cutting out corrupt deals, and shifting mindsets towards agriculture as a business. Very transformative indeed! In Kenya, we need to move away from politics, roll up sleeves and work! http://www.channelstv.com/home/2013/12/02/akinwumi-adesina-awarded-forbes-af...

Maybe Kenyan procurement (laws) do not prioritise good leadership (reputations not associated with bribery + deception) + practical experience + certification of skills. Maybe Kenyan procurement officials (if not laws) require 3 five million dollar deals to cut out Kenyan SME's? Muraya, Tell them. Who would like to bet that if our Ministry Of Agriculture wanted to implement a similar product Cellulant wouldn't get that deal? Here is the clause that some guy at some parastatal will insert... "... Evidence of at least 3 similiar implementations in at least 3 different continents..." Legend has it that the partnership rose from a chance meeting between Ken, the Cellulant CEO and Dr. Akinwumi on a shared flight. It is said that Ken managed to hastily sketch out the bare-bones solution on a piece of paper during the flight. If that is true, then it speaks much about the accessibility & willingness to listen on the good doctor's end. Tony.

Hello All, What the Nigerian Minister has achieved is not an easy task- Especially that of shifting mindsets of farmers from subsistence farming to agri-business. Such a mindset is critical for sustainability of mAgric solutions if that's important. Mfarm, Icow, M-shamba etc may not scale and grow to sustainable enterprises if the mindset of agribusiness is not entrenched enough. Given that agriculture is now a devolved function, it should interest us to see which of the county governments get the cue. Am thinking such progress is more achievable at a county specific level. ... My 20cents. Best regards On Dec 4, 2013 1:14 PM, "Brian Munyao Longwe" <blongwe@gmail.com> wrote:

John, Agreed. hope that one of the progressive Governors will pick and run with it. Once when speaking to a Safaricom manager incharge of community/govt apps, i underscored the opportunities to reach esp. farming communities with a killer app such as this one. If you get it right, the transformation would reach the levels of Mpesa or surpass. Hope someone is listening. Hey Edith, It appears to me, just like Prophets, innovations are never accepted at home. Even Mpesa and Ushahidi became famous outside Kenya before we owned them locally. But now that the Nigerian government has owned it and made a success out of it, we could use it as a case study to "convince" the powers that be to consider using it. Some of these initiatives though are actually better initiated and have a high success rate outside the government confines given the obvious ownership and procurement issues, just saying. The government of Kenya is more committed to alternative payments than most of us want to give credit to. Remember the direct link between MPESA and CBA? What of Huduma centres and the President's commitment to it's success? What about this line form CCK's strategic plan "Electronic Commerce (Mobile Money Services) Penetration from 58.9% to 70%" ______________________ Mwendwa Kivuva, Nairobi, Kenya. twitter.com/lordmwesh google ID | Skype ID: lordmwesh On 4 December 2013 22:08, Harry Hare | African eDevelopment Resource Centre <harry@africanedevelopment.org> wrote:

Question, what did we do with our own innovation?
