Re: [kictanet] SHADY DEALS AT UNON HR
These claims of unethical and unfair employment practices at the UN office in Nairobi have been around for a very long time. When I was at The Standard three years ago, we actually undertook an investigation of the allegations of rampant sex-for-employment and nepotism. Cant remember now if we published that story, but a few people seemed quite culpable. It appears there is something not quite right with the prestigious institution, and the top dogs there are well advised to approach this matter judiciously. UN Quota system does not mean that to be employed at Gigiri you have to be from a specific tribe or region in Kenya. Dont be ambigous in your answer. Also it doesnt mean that you exchange sex for appointments. Please read through complaints well and know that if UNON has a tribal quota system and sex gauge then we must be openly told so by Madam Tibaijuka and UNON Public Information Department. We might as well be wrong. Maybe they have such quota system. We aree not applying for SG, DG, SRSG, or any UN political position which starts from the P5. We need to know why GS and NO positions at UNON must be filled by only one tribe in Kenya.
Martin this is not a new question and the UN quota system has been promptly addressed by UN HQ HR in one of the mails we wrote to them. We need the Nairobi office to be open and not be run mafia style.
UN is a public body and the thought that we dont know anything about UN HR is wrong. Let UNON tell us what is happening.

The issue about shaddy deals at UNON especially on Employment is not true (though can correct me), we need to understand the creteria used to high staff there. UN is not just any other Private company or NGO in our neighbourhood. Must understand that UN employs through a quota criteria which reflects a country's annual contribution. Infact Kenya is the second leading after the United States in terms of UN Staffers, but because we host such a facility. Kenya's Quota for ur Information is 0.6% which is always full.
But ask yourself why is that NO single Kenyan holds high profile Job in the UN unlike Tanzania which has 2 ladies: Deputy Secretary General, H. E. Rose and Director UN Habitat H. E. Anna. Siple answear, Kenyans filled their quota through applying low cadre jobs. We should be ambitious and apply for middle or top cadre jobs! come you folks!
The secrete of securing a job at UN is through working as an intern, know the intrigues and networks but we should not displase our disappointments to unconfirmed allegations. To me is just defence mechanisms.
Thank you folks

I worked at the UNON - HR for 6 months. I and many others applied onlineand were called for interviews without knowing anyone. I also have a number of colleagues working there and they got jobs the same same way! Many having started as interns, then working on contracts/consultation then getting jobs which are also on contractual terms!!
What are these shady deals you are talking about????
FYI: HR is not even headed by Kenyans.... Which "particular" community is being favored?

I dont know what the heck is going on there, but I can put one plus one about this.
One thing I know for sure is that, it seems that on persons from a particular community are getting jobs from time to time.
Incidentally, paper qualification means nothing but where you come.
This habit has a gross effect of derailing our country and dichotomous a nation!
