Microsoft President Brad Smith Calls For a Digital Geneva Convention | Fortune.com

Listers A worthy conversation to have. Technology companies must retain the trust of their customers and must not assist governments with their hacking schemes even though world leaders may request them to do so. As an example of how technology companies can work together, he cited how Microsoft was impressed with other big tech companies like Google (GOOG, -0.39%) and Facebook (FB, -0.28%) in how they notified their users when their accounts may have been compromised in state-sponsored attacks. I think what is very nice about all this is the big names are stepping up to it. Also importantly, we need to give credit where it is due. This could not have also happened if the issue didn't come up as a result of the consumers of these technologies expressing their frustrations on this issue. Indeed Ahmed. Consider how destructive hacking can be in an IOT situation if someone decides to hack the Cloud Platform hosting hundreds of Heart Pacemakers.. This conversation is long overdue. A bit more related to this is the concept of open source innovation (and its interesting to see Microsoft is stepping up to it also - the firm you would least expect). The market is slowly moving into service provision over app sales, and that's why also Azure is becoming a bigger deal for Microsoft nowadays. That is where also IoT steps in. When you open source not only do you welcome into your company a greater innovative capacity from the community, but you also enhance on openness / transparency and build products that the markets trust and feel they were involved in. A Geneva Digital Convention indeed is an idea whose time has come. The individual is now part of the virtual world and it is necessary to have rules/regulations at the international level binding states on the digital rights of the individual in as much as the Geneva Convention does in the physical world. I cannot agree more with the conversation prompted by the Microsoft president. On 9 Apr 2017 09:18, "Ali Hussein via kictanet" < [email protected]> wrote:

If you haven't already, you should also watch the documentary film Zero Days [1], to see how bad cyber warfare can get, without such rules of war; and how the prevailing secrecy around cyber warfare isn't helping the debate.
