Is Kenyan Media Asleep?

Edith, Because foreign media have been agitating for inflammatory statements. Just that this time they do not have much for their dirty games. They are penchant for looking for sensational material to cause violence and fear of our situation both locally and internationally. At this time we need sober reporting and all efforts for peaceful conclusion of this delicate part of the polls. Reporting on a press conference is not automatically 'agitating for inflammatory statements'. I agree with the TV station's decisions not to air party press conferences live, but if you can't report on any criticism of the process, then media become pretty meaningless. CORD have said (as reported) that they will respect the legal process. I've quickly checked the Nation Facebook feed and they reported this 40min ago. Edith, While @AFP @BBCbreaking are looking for ratings, the local media houses are being protective and thinking ahead, "what kind of impact would those allegations if aired have on the local Mwananchi" if the honorable PM has evidence then, we can trust our judicial system to deal with that, a press conference is absolutely useless unless you are looking for support from the local mwananchi which would result in chaos. Of course some listers might still argue that information is important and that does not endanger any lives which humbly I see as being naive and simplistic. Edith, I think the local media seems to have been gagged to avoid raising political tension. All the media houses had their staff in the field and a in-house tallying centres from nearly all the constituencies but they are somehow afraid to share with the public since IEBC is the only body allowed to release elections results. I think situation, in my opinion raises un-certainty for no reason. Rgd, Cliff On 3/7/13, Edith Adera <eadera@idrc.ca> wrote:

Listers, I appreciate the points of view on the need to be careful on how citizens receive the live broadcasts - makes sense to manage the situation. I however think that because news travels fast, this is still likely to get to Kenyans in the classical "broken telephone" mode, which means the citizens get distorted/corrupted information that makes the situation even worse. While the media seems to be carefully managed (some here calling it gagged), we need to make sure that the citizens atleast hear from our own media rather than foreigners as this news would still reach the people in distorted form. -----Original Message----- From: Wycliff Ochieng [mailto:cliffexx@gmail.com] Sent: March 7, 2013 1:07 PM To: Edith Adera Cc: KICTAnet - Media Editors Forum; KICTAnet ICT Policy Discussions Subject: Re: [kictanet] Is Kenyan Media Asleep? Wycliffe, First, media houses cannot have 33,000 staff - one each at every polling centre - but political parties do have such manpower and have conflicting tallies. So the only credible source for the media is the IEBC.... That said, we need to admit as many Kenyans on social media already satirically put forward that the foreign press is too eager to seek negative news and will cling to the tiniest sign of bad news to spur a story. Local media are more careful and are in a delicate manner still informing the public of stories such as that raised by Edith - albeit with less excitement than the foreign media would. Where are the Media Owners Association (MOA) who run the presidential debate? Can they get together very quickly and agree on a media blackout for politicians sharing defeatist info. Otherwise, the principal purpose of the presidential debate and media-led peace campaigns might be quickly eroded...MOA led Kenya for Kenyans, Bring Zack Back Home and many more. I am sure they can do this. MOA has to come out and say they will cover the tallying process and encourage the rule of law! On Thu, Mar 7, 2013 at 12:21 PM, Edith Adera <eadera@idrc.ca> wrote:

I see KEPSA doing that kind of thing when it comes to issues of business interest even during this election period - they had a press conference yesterday. MOA and maybe Ndemo's committee (was it on security or something...though they seem to have stopped their public briefing), could clarify what's going on based on these latest news reaching Kenyans.
