Telkom Kenya has launched a new high-speed digital service for the internet.
The broadband service carries voice and broadcast services through the existing Telkom lines.
It is based on the latest Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line technology.
Launching it at Nairobi's Norfolk Hotel yesterday, Information and Communication permanent secretary James Rege said it was among measures to increase the State-owned firm's revenue.
Telkom managing director Sammy Kirui said the new service would help the firm to compete more effectively for customers in a liberalised market. Telkom has partnered with two firms, Wananchi Online and Interconnect Broadband, to sell the service.
Broadband service countrywide
To keep the tempo, it is continually modernising its network and equipment to meet the challenge of providing the best services.
This new service will be available countrywide, with an initial 6,000 connections in key exchanges, expected to grow to over 50,000 by 2006. Relevant Links
The launch is seen as the first step in providing Kenyans with a truly broadband service countrywide, especially in the rural areas, where most people live.
In another development, Mr Rege said the Information Communication Technology policy might be out in two weeks. The final draft had already been submitted to the Cabinet for approval.
