IF CCK CHOOSES TO MONITOR INTERNET TRAFFIC, WILL IT ALSO MANAGE TO BLOCK TORRENTS THAT CONSUME BANDWIDTH?
If CCK Kenya reported to make a call that it will monitor all internet traffic, can it also block the largest torrents and most used ones such as piratebay? Your opinions are welcomed. *Link: http://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2012/05/01/isps-told-to-block-pirate-bays-way... * -- *Regards,* *Michelle T.* *Cell: +254-734-695-532* * *
first, torrents evolve. Will CCK evolve as fast? I dont think so. ( THEY WILL END UP STUCK WITH EXPENSIVE/OBSOLTE SOFTWARE/ HARDWARE) Second, torrent clients are not generic, so will CCK be able to pin down all the different types? I dont know. Third, in the west they have decided to take down the largest pirates (read TIM dot Com and Newzealand). But even then, with Napster down, Megaupload gone... i still have thousands of peers seeding from every torrent i download. Its only a matter of time before someone else come up with something that makes torrents obsolete. rather than blockading the media owners should be thinking disruptive techonology, something that makes torrents irrelevant. My two cents.
CCK will have to hire very tough hackers to be able to bypass some of the security protocols most of us use. And with the lack of capacity in KE, hiring guys from Eastern Europe for this, will be expensive. Automation in Information Security never works, only for the lazy. So don't believe everything you hear. Kindly, ./Chucks On 5/1/12, Peter Wakaba <peterwakaba@gmail.com> wrote:

@John If i may ask, First: What does it take to monitor the web? Second: What does it take to block a torrent, say Pirate bay. I never followed up on the megaupload case On 1 May 2012 14:35, Gichuki John Chuksjonia <chuksjonia@gmail.com> wrote:

I think that what's needed is consumer education to help people understand the effect of such download sites on copyright etc., and at the same time, a call on the copyright owners to reduce the prices of their products and also to make them readily available so as to reduce the incentives for people to use torrent sites, or better yet find better ways of using P2P sites. While blocking sites such as piratebay may be options, i think such measures need to be balanced with the right of citizens to access information freely, without unnecessary restrictions, since i believe that there is legitimate 'copyright free' information that is transmitted in peer networks. Walu, Your message has arrived in good order. I didn't say zero - I just alluded to the fact that there are other cyber-threats that might have a higher priority than concerns over "Desperate Housewives Season 7" copyright issues. But as I watch CNN and see the exposé on how Al-Qaeda operatives were found with hundreds of documents hidden in encrypted form in what for all intents and purposes was a "normal" pornographic video file stored on a standard memory stick - then all of a sudden torrents jump closer to the top in terms of priority since they are the primary means by which (a lot) porn is "shared".... Please be careful out there, we need you back whole and healthy and of sound mind! :) Best regards, Mblayo On Fri, May 4, 2012 at 5:07 PM, Walubengo J <jwalu@yahoo.com> wrote:

It would appear "not very clever" to block peer to peer networks and torrents for that matter. Torrents may be used to pirate Intellectual Property but that is not what the protocol was build for. It enables people to move huge files even with limited bandwidth. Because cars kill on the road, do we block all cars from using a road? On 01/05/2012, John Gitau <jgitau@gmail.com> wrote:

DPI would make blocking possible irrespective of torrent clients, protocol etc. There would also be no need to do it per site such as pirates bay. The only other way to make blocking impossible is through encrypting traffic eg in VPN or tunnels such as ssh tunnels. On 05/01/2012 02:18 PM, Peter Wakaba wrote:
first, torrents evolve. Will CCK evolve as fast? I dont think so.

@Alex DPI could work for sure...but then again there is no need to do it on a site basis. On 1 May 2012 15:00, Alex Kamiru <nderitualex@gmail.com> wrote:
