Good morning Listers I have received a response from Engineer Kidenda. Ofcourse you do understand there have been tons and tons of emails to him (well maybe not tons but you get the point). He has requested that we kindly raise all SUBSTANTIVE issues by midnight today. He will then get his team to respond to all issues that concern KENHA. Barrack has accepted to consolidate all the issues that you have raised and will continue to track your concerns until midnight today. Dear Grace, Thanks for following up. The issue of data and the framework Eric provided is pertinent to the discussions and it would be good to know where Kenya standards vis a vis these international standards. As well, what are the "smart transport solutions" (ICTs integration) Kenya is considering to enhance road safety especially along the entire Thika road which seems to have claimed the highest number of lives in its short lifespan in Kenya's history. As it was referred to in one of the articles circulated on this list as the "longest black spot in Kenya" it underscores the concerns Kenyans have about this road. This does not minimize other roads in the country with the increasing cases of road accidents. I posed specific questions in my earlier post which I believe Barrack will capture. Thanks once again. Listers While we are at it, can someone tell me what happened to the Motor Vehicle Inspection unit where you had to annually submit your car to prove it had been serviced? It seems some of these quarry lorries and matatus involved in accidents are either unroadworthy or have not been serviced. I think annually everyone should be compelled to submit their vehicle to be cleared before it can be licensed to be on the road. Listers, This is an important step in making our roads, safe. My questions are as follows: 1. How are these roads categorized, in terms those managed by the local authorities, central government and, if possible, those ones that are internationally managed? 2. Why does the government ever award road contracts to companies that do not do their works professionally? 3. There is a contractor on who was awarded a contract to rehabilitate Nairobi-Naivasha Road ( between the former Museum Hill roundabout and Rironi) and they've dug a whole stretch of the road, about a kilometer and a half. There are dug up patches everywhere that drivers have to be extra cautious. Is there anything the Authority (assuming the said section is under Eng. Kidenda's Authority) can do to makes sure their are mechanisms in place for the contractor to does not put the lives of rod users at risk? Solomon The said road, Waiyaki Way, either falls under the Kenya Urban Roads Authority or Kenha. The said contractor is one SS Mehta who without fear or favour I can call an unreformed cowboy contractor of the KANU era and whose CV reads like all the don'ts of a contractor's code of ethics, if one exists. The roads budget in this country has gotten so big(last year it was Sh80billion and this year it is proposed at Sh95billion) that contractors to be given jobs have ran out leading to the rehabilitation of the likes of Mehta and Kudan Singh (another cowboy who was recently kicked out of the Gikambura-Mutarakwa road he had been building since 2007 and has now clinched another contract for the Voi-Wundanyi road - where if form holds true, he is about to leave a lot of grief). Franklin Bett recently published contractors manuals on how the government will expect road repairs to be conducted. A copy has not been given to SS Mehta it seems.
