When you sent an email to your friends about your government’s policies, who did you think would be reading that email? When you searched online for medical treatments, did you think anyone would be tracking your searches? Communicating Confidentially There are many reasons why Internet users might wish to be anonymous online, keep the content they are reading or sharing confidential, and why they may not want others to know which services they are using – privacy; personal security; concerns about surveillance by governments or private companies; concerns about potential repercussions for statements made in social media and/or hosting blogs for “cyber-activists”; and concerns about conclusions that may be drawn about them based on what they see and communicate on the Internet, to name a few. Each use case might require different tools and strategies. To better understand the problem space, we would like to collect information from Internet users that will help us gain a more complete understanding of their needs and expectations for confidential communications online.
