Listers, Been following this discussion and would just like to make a couple of comments: 1) The roads authorities were created to ensure specific allocation of responsibility which lacked in the past. So Eng. Kidenda as CEO of the Kenya National Highways Authority can be held responsible for the highways and trunk roads but not the urban roads which are squarely the responsibility of the Kenya Urban Roads Authority. 2) We have a great deal yet to do. As one of you intimated, some of what we are doing ought to have been done on the 60s and while that may be true, we still have to do it today if we didn't do it then. This even as we simultaneously move to the next level. The challenges raised by listers here are precisely what we need to raise the bar! Mr Kibati, have you been on Kenyatta Avenue of late? I bet you probably never find your way to Luthuli Avenue. I dont think it matters who the roads are under, but this is basically an indication of the kind of mediocrity that you must deal with if you will have any hopes of delivering on vision 2030. From shoddy jobs, to shoddy organization. The road between Embassy Roundabout and Museum Hill ( I am not sure if its called Kipande Road) was built less than 15 years ago. Today there is no road there worth talking about. Thats how we do our things. Short term solutions where we should be overhauling the entire system. I am sure right now someone is working on an RFP for that particular road. Kenya, and Nairobi in particular, needs to have a complete overhaul of everything. We need to plan this city afresh, from square 1. Then we must come up with a plan for the next 100 years. The big infrastructure projects going on will help a lot in developing the economy, but what will that mean for the peasant who cant get adequate medical care when they are sick? Will our people die of hunger again next year if rains fail? Are we waiting for that to happen so that we can have yet another mega fund raiser on M-Pesa? Everything is just ridiculous if you think about it. Your biggest fight is one against this one evil. Nature does not tolerate mediocrity! Bwana Kibati. Why are there so many bodies to manage roads? That all presumably have separate engineering, support, management and administrative staff. Why? Vision 2030 i would like to think is not just about infrastructure and ict. We can also grow this country by streamlining inefficiencies On 27 Jun 2012 20:10, "Evans Ikua" <[email protected]> wrote:

Listers,
Been following this discussion and would just like to make a couple of comments:
1) The roads authorities were created to ensure specific allocation of responsibility which lacked in the past.

My question is simple. Who is responsible for the drainage on our roads? KURA (Urban Roads Authority) does a very good job of repairing the various roads promptly, but never repairs drainage. Simple example is James Gichuru road. Why not fix the root cause of the problem? Listers, This is an important point. For every POT HOLE, there is usually poor drainage. So deal with drainage problems and most of the pot-holes will go . However even repair of pot holes is a big challenge even for Kenya National Highway Authority. If Eng. Kidenda doubts, may I plead with him to visit Limuru Road just beyond Village Market before reaching Rwaka tomorrow Friday 28th June 2012. There, he will find a contractor who has dug up a tarmac road open for days making it impassable without any warning signs. I will be surprised if an ACCIDENT does not happen there any time. Let the Kenya National Highway Authority tell Kenyans through any media whether that particular contractor has an iota of competence in simple POT HOLE repair. Listers, I am very sure Mugo is also asking some of these questions:). Those who have been in Government or work closely with government know that there are so many vested groups and power-houses and that no matter how much one goes in with determination to succeed in their duties, they tend to find several obstacles. I am not saying that no one should try- I am just saying, I doubt Mugo is in full control of formation of these bodies you are asking about. Maybe at most he has/will make recommedations, which may or may not be read or implemented, depending on various factors. There is so much re-organisation to be done- maybe the devolved system will iron out some? Waiting to see. But let Mugo speak for himself here.... Mugo, The main problem is that no one is saying what will be done to address the identified flaws on Thika road. Response from Eng Kidenda which was shared with this list only speaks about everything being alright! he is NOT "taking the bull by its horns"! For example, Gaitho points to one of the many flaws i.e. quote "If anything, they still come with designs that make a mockery of traffic engineering. An example that comes easily to mind is the Museum Hill-Ojijo Road intersection. Nowhere else in the world would you have a flyover with a crossroad directly below it. The gridlock that crazy design causes in the rush hour is something else. " When things go wrong, we should be ready to correct them and not try to convince people that it is good when it is not. As you say, we should build them now.....BUT build them well! As Director of V2030, you should be telling us that the following steps will be taken to address these flaws, leave alone the debri and uneven landscape around the museum hill (is the road finished or not?). Kenya is a very advanced country in many respects but the poor roads are an enigma. One does not need to go far. I was impressed with the roads in Addis Ababa. Someone told me that the Addis-Moyale road is tarmacked smooth while the Nairobi-Moyale one, which is shorter, is not. One factual correction though, The Kenya Rural Roads Authority and Kenya Urban Roads Authority are not under the purvue of Eng. Kidenda. He is in charge only of the Kenya National Highways Authority.
