IHRDA was founded in 1997 as a pan-African non-governmental organization, based in The Gambia, to enhance the use and effectiveness of African regional human rights mechanisms through legal advocacy, capacity building, research and publications, and cooperation with the African regional human rights system. The publications and communications Officer should start work in January 2015. The Publications and Communications officer will: 1. Develop and implement publication and communication strategies; 2. Write and disseminate press releases, news articles, electronic newsletters and other publicity material; 3. In consultation with IHRDA programme staff, plan, organize and edit all IHRDA publications, both electronic and hard copy; 4. Manage the IHRDA’s case law analyser (CLA); 5. Liaise with printers/suppliers on production management; 6. Publicise and ensure wide and relevant distribution of the IHRDA’s publications; 7. Write website content and ensure regular updating of the website; 8. Develop and maintain contacts with various stakeholders and partners; 9. Manage the IHRDA’s documentation centre, maintaining the organization of printed material and identifying new information likely to be of interest to staff working on the main programme areas of IHRDA; 10. Assist in fundraising activities, including grant writing; 11. Perform administrative tasks relating to the post. Qualifications 1. A bachelors degree; 2. Excellent writing, editing and speaking skills in English and or in French; a good working knowledge of the other language is an important asset. Knowledge of another African Union language an advantage; 3. Ability to transform complex texts into reader-friendly documents for a pan -African audience and to proof-read translations for obvious errors; 4. At least three years demonstrated experience with publications and relevant experience in media relations and NGO an advantage; 5. Excellent computer and internet skills, especially related to the production of publications, and experience writing for the web. Proficiency with Windows, Microsoft Office, graphic design and web publishing products essential; 6. Ability to work with minimum supervision within a multicultural team; Compensation is very competitive and is tax-free. Retirement benefits and family health coverage is provided.
