Helping Haiti move on...
CNN has highlighted the fact that Haitians are being buried in mass graves without any records being made? The asian Tsumani victims had photos taken and matched to their 'mass grave' so the relatives will get some sort of closure. Is there an existing ICT initiative that is helping to keep records of the dead and match them to their 'mass grave'? ...or an effort to help relatives not look for someone forever? I'd be happy to bring together volunteers to assist with such. Wainaina -- Sent from my mobile device --- http://www.bungesms.com http://www.madeinkenya.org http://www.wainainamungai.com
Hey Mungai, Indeed this would be quite a noble endeavor, though the circumstances such as what Haiti finds itself in are quite daunting. Secondly, most of the victims have been interred in mass graves already as there are no preservation units. Understandably, it is such kind of a chaotic situation that may offer quite little in allowing for some form of identification of the victims before burial, leave alone even a proper send off by the relatives - especially given the condition they are in. The entire government infrastructure is gone that would carry out record verification. The huge relief effort underway is essentially targeting the survivors who are in urgent need, as a priority. However, all is not lost and it is worthy noting the positive role Technology has played in this tragedy, including our own homegrown - Ushahidi in relief co-ordination and Information gathering and dissemination.. I do believe that one of the most crucial aspects of this whole tragedy where ICT-driven solutions will play a big role is in recovery & reconstruction. So, while we may have not been part of the relief initiatives underway,I do hope that our engineers - and we have many, specialised in Telecommunication, public works, Architecture, Bridge Construction and other areas, can be willing to lend a hand when duty calls.
