Why Kenya is NOT ready to deploy 5G technologies
Listers, Mr John Walubengo and Mr Barrack Otieno spend some time establishing Kenya’s preparedness to deploy fifth-generation wireless networks (5G). The study reviews the historical progression of mobile networks through to the current 5G mobile technologies. It then highlights the technical properties and use-cases that 5G technologies. In addition, they reviewed the global 5G state of play and contrasts that with a situational analysis for Kenya. It finds that whereas the Kenyan legal, policy, and regulatory frameworks are quite advanced, there is no specific, national 5G Strategy in place. Listers, Zambia through the Zambia Information and Communications Authority (ZICTA) seems to have set aside frequencies to Airtel paving way for 5G deployment. Seems Southern Africa is off the ramp and as usual we might have to play catch up. Regards On Tue, Jan 19, 2021 at 11:58 AM Ali Hussein via kictanet < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:

Listers, To say that Kenya has no 5G Strategy is actually a very serious matter, not to be taken lightly. If true, then somebody in public sector is sleeping on the job. If existing operators are not ready, it is Ok.New ones will emerge if there is business opportunity. That is the way technology works. If you doubt me, just ask Elon Musk! We all know that Safaricom had been testing 5G for some time. Is it safe to say that it happened in a vacuum?? -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254 7 3200 0004/+254 7 2274 3223 "Oh, the cruft.", grep ^[^#] :-)
Odhiambo The launch of 5G services is dependent on spectrum... Once an operator gets enough of it, and agrees a fair price, operators in Kenya will launch. The problem is the lack of a strategy that would define "enough" and "fair price"... Then there are all the other aspects mentioned in the kictanet report, such as industry and academic collaboration, various use case pilots etc. which would then maximize the impact of 5G if done well and help speed up that impact.
