I agree. Regulation of social media should be Africa-sensitive. A closely related issue is: Is social media Africa-sensitive in the first place? Yesterday, during the Cipesa virtual event, it was mentioned that process is important and Africa needs to be involved right at the start of these major decisions that will affect the future of the Internet. Good point. The damage in Africa may be worse than people think; in some cases, kids are more tech-savvy than their parents; in many cases, parents may not even be aware that their kids are roaming the internet untethered and interacting with all kinds of characters, content, etc. I am also wondering whether anyone has done a formal study of how much time kids spend online, what they watch, with whom, etc. …and the impact this has on them: socially, mentally and otherwise. A few years ago, I helped a church minister do a book titled ‘Where Are True Parents’ that spoke, in part, to technology and how it has impacted parenting. https://nuriakenya.com/product/where-are-true-parents/ From: Mildred Achoch via KICTANet <kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> Sent: February 1, 2024 2:20 PM To: mnyanchama@aganoconsulting.com Cc: Jennifer Kaberi <jennifer@mtotonews.com>; Mildred Achoch <mildandred@gmail.com> Subject: [kictanet] Re: Online Child Sexual Abuse and Mental Health Issues Dominate Social Media CEOs Grilling by US Senate I agree. Next week during safer internet day. I will speaking on digital harm at the USAID Digital harm PCYDH symposium, comparing stats from Africa to the rest of the world. African numbers are not looking good. The problem is we are using western interventions to online safety, copy and paste without contextualizing. Also we need to evaluate the role of big tech in shaping of what is digital harm in Africa, let's look beyond OCSEA. Register for the event using the link below https://pcydh.conference.tc/t/pcydh-2024/events/africa-and-europe-opening-st...
