Kenya cuts cost of acquiring .ke domain by a third

And to make it compulsory to have a .ke domain if a registered company here...yay or nay? http://www.businessdailyafrica.com/Kenya-cuts-cost-of-acquiring--ke-domain-b... Regards, Nanjira. Sent from my iPhone.

Absolutely baffling. Is the aim of this exercise the registration or the usage? On Fri, Jun 24, 2016 at 6:35 PM, Nanjira Sambuli via kictanet < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:

KICTANetiquette : Adhere to the same standards of acceptable behaviors online that you follow in real life: respect people's times and bandwidth, share knowledge, don't flame or abuse or personalize, respect privacy, do not spam, do not market your wares or qualifications.

Also a schizophrenic read. Later it is acknowledged that they know they should show the value of a .ke domain, but then take on this approach, to tick off metrics and rise up in rankings or what? Regards, Nanjira. Sent from my iPhone.

That article is misleading. The registry price for KE has been $6.5 for nearly two years now. Probably more. There is also no law that will requires a new company to have a post office box, or a telkom Kenya phone number, or even a twitter account. We can however give incentives, and continue selling the brand Ke, which the population have come to love after the great strategy execution by the current KENIC board and staff. In my previous experience at Kictanet, we would call a stakeholder meeting and discuss this opportunity and agree on a way forward. I doubt we will pass legislation to force companies on to .ke but there are several things we can do to gain more use of .ke. All that said, there is poor design and name reservation list on the .ke namespace. For example, KENIC let www.co.ke be registered by some Chinese entity. Usually common URL identifiers in the .or.ke .co.ke .ne.ke .me.ke . go.ke should be reserved in perpetuity. I wish KENIC can give a rational for this. On registering domains on the .ke root, that may be possible after stakeholder consultations, and change of the current regulations that govern the .ke root. This has been debated for decades, and where we stand currently, there is a possibility the community will allow that to go on. Here is the current .ke regulations http://www.kenyalaw.org/LegalNotices/pop_ln.php?file=453

I think my explanation on IG issues has evolved to a level not easily comprehensible. We are talking the same thing here. That the namespace can be opened to accommodate registrations at the second level rather than sub domains. We may get an announcement soon on the same from the relevant bodies. But for that to happen, there must be proper stakeholder engagement. It cannot happen overnight. For example, a reservation period of say 4 years has to be put in place for all the current owners of any .ke domain to register their name first before anybody else takes them up. So I don't expect Collins to own google.ke at the expense of google.co.ke. So if there was a popular name you were dreaming of, you have no luck because the current owners are given first priority. There is a misconception by the community that opening up the namespace to allow registration at the second level will push up number, or that it will give people more variety. Nothing can be further from the truth. My crystal ball (not the same as that of Makau Mutua) tells me that we will not achieve more than 10,000 after opening it up. And most of this will be domainers. South Africa have never opened up their .za namespace yet they still managed to get their domains to surpass the one million mark. We are still sub 100k. I can see Ebele salivating at the possibility of registering Achike Adefolake Adeleke Adenike Fowoke Ibironke Oluwatoke ... KENIC should not rely on Nigeria or any other external source to push our numbers up. Nigeria with 180 million people has only managed a paltry 70k domains in the .ng. They don't have enough disposable income to push their numbers up, let alone ours. You see, there is a correlation of domain registrations with income per capita. See this simple statistics de at 16million domains, population 81million people, per capita $47,033 .uk at 10million domains, population 65million people, per capita $41,159 .za at 1million domains, population 54 million people, per capita $13,165 .ng at 70thousand domains, population180million people, per capita $6,108 .ke at 58thousand domains, population 44million people, per capita $2,780 My point is, the growth of the .ke namespace is not reliant on excuses that it's not open. Because when we shall open it, then we will start looking at the next scapegoat. Remember the number portability that we all asked to have? It's virtually dead. Sincerely, Mwendwa Kivuva

I agree with you, but I bet India & Chinese Domain Name registration vs Income per capita will fall out of that graph. I would still support top level domains as suggested. Waithaka when you say "we need to build Kenya first as a globally recognized brand in technology leadership." Isn't one of the ways to do that through promoting our own .ke name space? As you rightfully pointed out the reason you may not have had much success with a .ke domain was because your audience is not familiar with .ke and was therefore hesitant to deal. But maybe the reason was simply because we are not known as a cloud hosting provider, when potential clients checked out .ke and it turned out to be Kenya, whom they had probably never heard of before they simply turned elsewhere. For businesses and orgs with local clientele our .ke works, so it all boils down to your audience, me thinks. Thank you, ------George Irungu www.logicalcrest.co.ke Date: Tue, 28 Jun 2016 09:23:35 +0300 Subject: Re: [kictanet] Kenya cuts cost of acquiring .ke domain by a third From: kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke CC: ngigi@at.co.ke; kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke To: g.irungu@logicalcrest.co.ke Listers, I would like to put in my 2 Cents on this domain growth issue. Where is the demand? From personal experience, .KE domains as much as we'd like to love them are simply unknown from the larger global perspective. And even for local firms, they come 2nd to .Com We once ran our software business targeted at international clientele off our. KE domain and there would be myriad questions about, where are you guys based, are you capable of hosting & running these services from Kenya (notwithstanding we were using AWS), are you guys in South Africa, are you? At about the same time, .io (Indian Ocean) domain was launched and companies initially from these parts of the world rushed in and started registering. Companies globally also jumped in after. We also jumped in and registered our. io domain.... problem solved. Why? Coz no one questions a company potentially based in Singapore or India or Australia or Taiwan or China or New Zealand or South Africa or (name a technology leader in Indian Ocean) We need to build Kenya first as a globally recognized brand in technology leadership. This in itself is a challenge, seeing we almost always push for quick wins as opposed to long-term & viable strategies. I will put in my other contributions on this policy later on. Listers One thing that I'd hope is not lost on this discussions is the tremendous growth of the .ke domain. I understand we are now at 58k domains? This is more than Nigeria with a population 2.5 times ours but sadly a drop in the ocean when we bring in South Africa to the equation with a million+ domains. .ke is a national treasure and if we follow the global domain trend we see now that ccTLDs are upstaging gTLDs in demand. Let's face it:- You are more likely today to get a .ke extension to your brand than a .com. KeNIC has done very well to date. The onus is on us to give them ALL our support to grow the .ke space. Now do I hear people rushing to ditch their gmail accounts for personal email and rushing to register that .me.ke domain? :-) Ali Hussein Principal Hussein & Associates +254 0713 601113 / 0770906375 Twitter: @AliHKassim Skype: abu-jomo LinkedIn: http://ke.linkedin.com/in/alihkassim "Discovery consists in seeing what everyone else has seen and thinking what no one else has thought". ~ Albert Szent-Györgyi Sent from my iPad
