Those new terms from Facebook/WhatsApp are terrible. Bad for privacy. To illustrate how good laws and punitive fines protect citizens, Facebook has different rules for Europe. Because of GDPR, these new changes do not appear in the European version of the updated terms and conditions. Facebook later confirmed that the rules will not apply in the EU, EEA, or the UK. https://digit.fyi/facebook-to-access-whatsapp-user-data-except-in-europe/ It seems the rest of the world does not matter, even with Data Protection laws available in countries like Kenya. My take it could be more of under table business trade agreement between Whatsapp and Signal. After the announcement from Elon Musk [coincidentally the world's richest man] for guys to move to signal app the stock jumped to 1100%. Screenshot on the trade app overview. Listers, Amidst all this, what is the Data Commissioner's position on this whole issue? We appointed her, despite misgivings even on my part as to her suitability for that job, but these are the big questions asked of such a position. Can she step up and give her take on how Kenya will handle this and other "corvice" consent demands by Big Data? Maria With all due respect, I don't subscribe to your point of view that Safaricom needs to be broken. Here's why:- 1. Cash transactions make up over 80% of all payment transactions in Kenya. So instead of wasting time discussing breaking up Safaricom why not fight cash instead? 2. There is solid competition in the country against Safaricom's Mpesa. They just need to step up. 1. Cash transactions make up over 80% of all payment transactions in Kenya. So instead of wasting time discussing breaking up Safaricom why not fight cash instead?
2. There is solid competition in the country against Safaricom's Mpesa. They just need to step up. IPSL's Pesalink <https://www.ipsl.co.ke/>, owned by the Kenya Bankers' Association can be a solid bulwark against this hegemony.
3. There are enough tools at the disposal of the regulator to keep any player who abuses market power in check.

1. Cash transactions make up over 80% of all payment transactions in Kenya. So instead of wasting time discussing breaking up Safaricom why not fight cash instead?
2. There is solid competition in the country against Safaricom's Mpesa. They just need to step up. IPSL's Pesalink <https://www.ipsl.co.ke/>, owned by the Kenya Bankers' Association can be a solid bulwark against this hegemony.
3. There are enough tools at the disposal of the regulator to keep any player who abuses market power in check.

Hi Listers, WhatsApp has probably been sharing data with Facebook for a while now if I'm not mistaken. I had two acquaintances on WhatsApp, not friends on Facebook & having no relations whatsoever with my Facebook friends. They appeared as suggested friends on Facebook.
