Sometimes I wonder...to kickstart Konza...why not take 100 software developers/it specialists and give them "space" to work from and have 1 big internet pipe servicing the area.....for free for first 1yr...then for a fee from year 2....ok maybe my idea is unreasonable but we aren’t dealing with reasonable circumstances in this country/continent. Maybe young technology entusiasts would work anywhere if they had internet and not have to pay rent at their initial start. Plus from year two, you would convert those people to "partners" of the Konza City. Let me get back to punching code..... -----Original Message----- From: kictanet [mailto:kictanet-bounces+bkioko=bernsoft.com@lists.kictanet.or.ke] On Behalf Of Barrack Otieno via kictanet Sent: Wednesday, January 28, 2015 5:16 PM To: bkioko@bernsoft.com Subject: Re: [kictanet] Blow as acting Konza techno city boss Catherine Adeya quits Well done Catherine i bet it has not been easy, we do hope Konza City will become a reality some day just like Free Primary Education, having attended the groundbreaking before former President Kibaki left office,i am hopeful that the optimism he had is still there. Barrack, I am confident that some day I will walk down the streets of Konza. A top official who has been at the helm of the Konza Techno City project has opted out amid claims of resource constraints and slow progress.
Dr Catherine Adeya-Weya, who has been the acting chief executive officer of the Konza Technopolis Development Authority for two years, said she had decided to quit and let someone else come in and lead the project.
It was, however, clear from her statements that bureaucratic tendering, resource constraints and the slow pace of takeoff had largely influenced her decision.
"I just felt someone else needs to take over this project after acting for almost two years. I may have considered staying if confirmed, but I may not have wanted it. For a project of this magnitude, we require the right calibre of staff, and a proper and sufficient recurrent budget.
''What I was being paid as chief executive was less than what I used to earn in my former role in the private sector and so it is hard to attract the high calibre staff with that remuneration," Dr Adeya-Weya said at a joint press conference in Nairobi with board chairman, Mr John Ngumi, on Tuesday.
*PERFORMED WELL*
Mr Ngumi said Dr Adeya-We ya had performed well despite being in an acting capacity for the entire period.
He, however, added that the authority was prepared to continue with the little available resources since insufficient funding was a normal challenge in all government projects.
The chief executive's term was to end in February, with an option to apply when the position was announced in November last year.
She, however, chose not to, sparking speculations around her withdrawal from the team she has led for months.
Mr Ngumi said: "In my view, Catherine has had one of the toughest jobs. Anybody who has worked in the private sector knows how hard it is to start a startup. It is harder in the public sector where you have all manner of stakeholders, and you got to deal with constraints and criticism.
"She is an example of what we should have in public service and we, as the board, would have loved her to apply. I have implored her to remain involved in Konza at advisory role to the project." ______________________ Mwendwa Kivuva, Nairobi, Kenya

Walu, A plot you can still get. Within Konza all you have to do is send an EOI on what you would like to do, engage with the MDP2, if you have some money the better as we need to make money to reduce reliance on the Exchequer, then get you Ka-plot and start work. Seriously we have a fantastic Concept but it requires us to take it to the next level. We need more of you to come in and assist. There is a plan to engage the ICT Community in a more organized way. Some have criticized that it was a Real Estate project. If you notice I kept quiet at a certain point as I had also learnt alot of what had not been said. We need to up our game on marketing this project not like one marketing Yoyo Yoghurt but a Smart City. The Board is working on that. That aside, the ICT community (including me) were very critical of this project when initially conceived. We wondered what is in it for us? We were shown the field and we asked how can we come to a greenfield not infrastructure, no connectivity etc. The experts took a step back and learnt from Kevin Costner's Field of Dreams. They are on track. Watch this space. And Walu, use Konza as a teaching tool for your students on what to do and what not to do. We will talk. Nway, you were there from the beginning and your contribution will be always be remembered. And on that note, someone needs to write the memoirs on ICT evolution in Kenya - the key projects, players, their roles & challenges. Particularly for the period before KANU left (1998-2002), NARC period (2002-2007), Coalition period (2008-2013) through now.
It doesn't hurt for the future generation to learn from what is now becoming ICT history right before our eyes.

Yes Mwendwa,
I am a founding member of Kictanet and will always be here though sometimes I lurk in the background. To set the record straight. I did not quite, my Contract in government has come to an end. I have been Acting for two years and truth be told, I did not want to be handed the position on a silver platter. They advertised, I did not apply. The rest is history so let me sign off with:

Dear Nyaki, I would like to go on record here in recognising and appreciating the contribution you have made to the ICT community in Kenya and especially the Konza project. I remember you lamenting a few month after coming back from "majuu" how you came back with so much psyche to be involved in developing the country but no one seems to be giving you an opportunity. I cheered madly when you were appointed as acting CEO at Konza because after working closely with you on a number of KICTANET projects (when we were much more externally active ;) I had come to know you as a no-nonsense, serious, focused, professional and very articulate person. I anticipated that you would encounter a lot of challenges working inside government because these kind of people generally tend to attract a lot of opposition, resentment and downright antagonism. But you have made it thus far. Kudos to you Catherine! I wish you well and encourage you to remain engaged in furthering this great nation's future. Very best regards, Mblayo On Wed, Jan 28, 2015 at 7:24 PM, S.M. Muraya via kictanet < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:
