Australian Treasurer proposes 'Netflix Tax' for digital imports
Australia: Feb 10 Digital products such as books, movies, games, apps and e-books purchased by Australians from overseas could soon attract the Goods and Services Tax (GST), popularly ‘ Netflix Tax’. The Treasurer (equivalent of Kenyan Cabinet Secretary of Finance) argues that this will level the playing field between Australian and overseas businesses. Importantly, for the government especially, is the possible USD60 Million tax that can be collected annually. The EU and Japan are seen as trend setters on this. This is a policy issue we may be having in Kenya very soon, if it is hasn’t started as yet. The interesting question for us will be: what is this level playing field that we will be creating if local businesses are heavily taxed even during the startup stages? On 10 Feb 2016 6:05 pm, "Mose Karanja via kictanet" < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:

Greetings, The USD.350M 4 year tax that expects to be collected must be a great incentive for the Treasury to work on this. A key message is on leveling the playing ground between their local players and overseas; economic interests. In Kenya for instance with the Uber entry and local taxi fights, even with the digital euphoria, it is important to listen to and work with the local voice from their perspective. Blessed weekend! Hi Listers, I totally agree with Wangari, in as much as we get very excited by digital imports it is also important to protect local economies by ensuring that revenues are generated locally for products purchased digitally from the international market.
